Garnett's
fitness tonic for Latics
SHAUN
GARNETT has given in-form Athletic a boost before Saturday's home game
with Brentford.
The
big defender missed Tuesday's ill-fated Auto Windscreens Trophy tie with
Stoke City because of a calf-muscle strain. But he has declared himself
fit and raring to go for this weekend when Athletic will be seeking their
third league win in a row following victories over Bournemouth and previously
undefeated Wigan.
Midfield
maestro John Sheridan, rested in midweek when the game against Stoke was
abandoned due to a power failure which blacked out the floodlights, will
also be available to face Brentford. Manager Andy Ritchie said: "Shaun's
injury wasn't too bad and he'll be okay for Saturday, while we just decide
to give John a break in midweek.
"We
knew Neil Adams could occupy that central midfield role, so Tuesday was
a chance to give him a go at it just in case the need arises at some later
date."
Not
surprisingly, Ritchie says there are unlikely to be wholesale team changes
this weekend. Strikers Paul Beavers and Craig Dudley, who are edging back
to full fitness, are expected to be involved in the squad to keep up the
pressure for places in attack. Finnish trialist Tero Karhu will get another
chance to impress Athletic in the reserves next week.
The
20-year-old left-sided midfielder made his debut in last night's 1-0 defeat
at Port Vale but did not really sparkle.
Ritchie
said: "It was perhaps a lack of match sharpness and the fact he was thrown
into the side so soon after arriving in the country. He's with us for a
fortnight, though, so we'll have another look at him."
A
point last night would have put the reserves on top of the Pontins League
premier division, but that honour went to Port Vale, who fielded a vastly-experienced
team and won with a 44th-minute goal from Saji Burton. Ryan Sugden missed
a great chance to equalise in the closing minutes and Ritchie said: "I
think, on the balance of play and chances, our lads probably deserved a
draw."

Defender
boost
The Latics Reserves
missed out on the chance of going back to the top of the Pontins Premier
Division last night. The second-string went down 1-0 at Port Vale although
they did have the chance to take the points. Disappointed boss Andy Ritchie
said: "We had our chance to win the game but we just couldn't make them
count." On the plus side Richard Graham started his comeback from a back
injury. The 24 year-old defender lasted the full 90 minutes and could now
be in line for a first team start later in the month.
Trialist
staying for now
Andy Ritchie took
last night's reserve game as an opportunity to run the rule over Finnish
trialist Tero Karhu. The 20 year-old left-sided midfielder failed to make
an impression but the boss will watch him in training and in next week's
reserve team match. The Finland Under-21 international is expected to stay
at Boundary Park for another fortnight. Karhu played for the Latics in
a behind-closed-doors friendly against Halifax last month and did enough
then to be invited back.
He is currently
on the books of Jokarit who are one of Finland's biggest clubs after Helsinki.
Sagi's off to flyer
Ghanaian trialist
Sagi Burton got off to a scoring start when he hit the winner for Vale's
reserves in the 1-0 Pontins League victory over Oldham. The 22-year-old,
whose real name is Osagyefo Sagi Lenin Ernesto Burton-Godwin, was on Crystal
Palace's books and made 28 appearances for the South London club before
moving on. Brian Horton was impressed with the central defender in the
reserve game and will be contacting his agent to see if there is a chance
of a deal.
And Burton is
also impressed with what he has seen of Vale and is waiting to see how
the situation develops. Burton said: "It was good to get a game last night
and I have been impressed with what I have seen of Port Vale."
