RICK WISE

This right-hander was a very good pitcher on some very bad teams ... was also an excellent hitter, a great fielder (only 2 errors in his entire Phillies' career)... an All-Star and the only pitcher in history to fire a no-hitter and hit two home runs in the game. Wise accomplished the feat at Cincinnati on June 23rd, 1971. What many fans don't recall is that a couple of months later, Wise hit a pair of home runs again, and then in September, in one of his final outings as a Phillie, recorded a remarkable feat. In a 4-3, 12-inning win over the Cubs, Wise retired 32 straight batters, 2nd only to Harvey Haddix's 36 straight in 1959. By the way, Wise won the game with an RBI single. He closed out his 7 years with the Phils with 75 wins and was traded to St. Louis for another pretty good pitcher, Steve Carlton.
