Elvis, Memphis, & Mark | ||||||||
Hey SCUD fans!! So is everyone ready for our little adventure... here it goes! Alco and I (Iwona) left New Orleans around 7pm, and it was off to Memphis! After about 3 hours of driving and a great bulls---story to get out of a speeding ticket, we stopped to get gas. Alco went to call Ilana to find out the score, because Mark was playing that night (Thursday). She came back to the car.... Mark lost 1-6, won 6-3, but it is tie 6-6! I froze, "WHAT?" How could that be. We called Nabs, and Ilana again, but no new postings on yahoo. So we jumped in the car and drove. Drove, drove, drove, 100 mph. Two hours later and thirty miles outside of Memphis we pulled over again. Alco called Nabs. She came back to the car, "you are not going to believe this, he lost 10-12, tie breaker". I thought I was going to die!! This was our time, to meet him, to see him play live. No we wouldn't accept it. "We came here to see tennis and we will," Alco said. I knew it would be. Then Cher's song came "Do you belive in life after love." Even though it was 12:30 at night, I got pumped. It wasn't over yet! He was in the same town as we were! We were on a mission. We had all your postings for him! We weren't going to let you guys down! We were going to give him those postings and a little "present." We were going to meet him! |

Well almost two hours later, driving literally in circles around Memphis, we hit the jackpot. We heard of tennis players hanging out at a certain bar. It was 2:30 am, slim chance he was going to be there after his late night, but lady luck was on our side! We walked by the bar and looked in. To our amazement there was Gavin and Charlie! We walked or should I say floated into the bar. Last call. Lights were on. Only 15 people there. And there, there he was, leaning over the pool table... the one... the only... Mark. | ||||||||
What a site! Well after he was done playing, Alco and I went up to him. I couldn't feel my body, I had way too much caffeine in me, I had been driving for seven hours, but that was all good, here he was, only a couple of inches away. It is always scary meeting someone you idolize, because there is high probability he will not meet your expectations. Mark not only met them, but surpassed them. He was sweet, kind, adorable, cute, gracious, anything and everything we had ever imagined. He was so thankful. You could tell he was sad about his loss, but when he saw all your postings, he couldn't believe it. He was shocked. He flipped through them slowly. He couldn't believe all the support. He thanked us a million times (or so it seemed). I think he needed the support! It was our moment. It was wonderful. He truly is an amazing individual and I hope he never changes. So I guess that point of the story is even when life looks really down, believe and go after what you want! Who is stopping you except yourself (and maybe the law!) I hope you enjoyed.
