PRINCIPAIS CANDIDATOS AO TÍTULO:
"Coloco em primeiro lugar a Alemanha pela sua tradição, é um tricampeão do mundo e está quase sempre nas finais - é o adversário mais difícil para o Brasil. A Itália, embora tenha se classificado com dificuldades é também um tricampeão,tem tradição e cresce nas copas. A França por ser a anfitriã, jogando em seus domínios e por ter no momento um bom time. A Inglaterra que conquistou o torneio na França, embora tenha perdido para nós, apresentou um futebol um pouco fora do seu habitual, procurando tocar a bola, sem usar constantemente os cruzamentos sobre a área. Uma nova mentalidade do treinador atual . Espanha, que fez uma bela campanha nas eliminatórias, com mais de trinta jogos sem perder, apesar de nunca ter chegado às finais (esse é o seu grande problema). Vai seu uma copa extremamente difícil, ninguém pode se iludir. Eu estou otimista e devemos acreditar sempre. Não temos medo de ninguém, mas a competição será jogada na Europa, em horário e clima favoráveis a eles, onde poderão empregar um ritmo intenso. Temos que nos preparar muito bem. Agora, eles sabem que pra vencer o Brasil é preciso também estarem muito bem preparados.
SOMOS OS FAVORITOS ?
O Brasil por tudo que apresentou desde a Copa de 94 até hoje, jogando 54 partidas e só perdendo uma, para a NORUEGA, é um sério candidato. Nosso time mudou até a sua maneira de jogar, estamos com um futebol mais solto em comparação ao apresentado em 94, nos Estados Unidos, mas para ser campeã do mundo, a seleção tem de ser competitiva, aplicada e criativa. Mas não vamos à Copa para fazer exibições ou malabarismos. A Copa é uma competição cruel. Uma simples derrota pode significar a volta para a casa. Exijo antes de mais nada um time lutador, com os jogadores sabendo atuar sem a bola, sentindo a partida, se posicionando corretamente. Muitos ironizam a frase "jogar sem bola". Deveria ser ao contrário, pois jogar com a bola é o óbvio no futebol. Qualquer peladeiro sabe ( ou pensa que sabe).
O TIME TITULAR
O time que derrotou a Austrália na final da Copa na Arábia ? Acho que sim. O setor defensivo está praticamente definido. No meio de campo, fiz todos os testes possíveis. Repito: a equipe que jogou aquela final, na Arábia, está bem próxima do ideal. O César Sampaio teve atuação destacada, me dando uma tranqüilidade, porque achei o jogador que procurava para substituir o Flávio Conceição, podendo até a vir disputar a posição.
FUTEBOL OFENSIVO !
Ter um equilíbrio na equipe é que é fundamental, você tem que estar bem organizado na defesa, meio campo e ataque.
Quando você fala em jogar ofensivamente, você só está pensando no ataque e acaba se descuidando das outras partes.
Já participei de quatro copas pelo Brasil( duas jogando e duas dirigindo). Em 1958, eu já vinha pela esquerda fechar um setor. Em 62 ficou mais ainda acentuado, por ter aumentado a idade média da equipe, que foi praticamente a mesma de 58.
Em 70 tínhamos craques de alto nível, mas eles foram bem posicionados para quando o Brasil perdia a posse da bola. Foi ofensivo quando tinha a posse da bola. Quando perdia a bola a equipe estava arrumada.
Nossos jogadores não eram jogadores de pegada, Gerson, Pelé Rivelino e até o Jairzinho ( um craque altamente ofensivo ), voltavam para combater. O único jogador de pegada era o Clodoaldo.
Nós não deixamos de ser eficientes, tanto na defesa quanto no ataque.
Isso se chama futebol equilibrado.
A de 1994 foi uma das Copas mais difíceis em que a seleção brasileira foi muito pisoteada. Ela foi competitiva e se assim não fosse, não teríamos conseguido o título.
Futebol em Copa do Mundo é competição. Futebol-arte, eu gosto , mas ele surge naturalmente em meio a uma partida e ao longo da competição. Nosso material humano é excepcional e eu não vou pedir pra ninguém jogar feio. Seria um absurdo.
BEBETO QUASE FORA DA COPA(?)
Tive uma reunião com o Bebeto, Romário e Ronaldinho na Arábia.O tema foi sobre termos vários atacantes para duas vagas no ataque, e qual seria a reação daquele que tivesse de ser reserva.
Gosto muito do Bebeto, mas sei que ele não gosta de ser reserva. Mas está convocado.
TRÊS ATACANTES
Jamais vou jogar com três atacantes a não ser numa opção, dentro de uma partida, como uma tentativa para mudar um placar, por exemplo. Mas começar com três lá frente, não. Ficamos vulneráveis e arriscados a perder o meio campo que é a mola mestra de uma equipe. Jogar melhor é controlar a partida, uma função que cabe quase que exclusivamente ao meio-campo.
EUROPEUS
Quando os europeus vão jogar uma copa em outro Continente, fazendo uma marcação rígida, por pressão ou individual, eles invariavelmente cansam no segundo tempo e abrem espaços, isso não acontecerá na França, por causa do clima e considerando que os jogos serão à noite.
Essa Copa será mais difícil porque teremos 15 equipes européias participando. Acredito que a Iugoslávia pode ser a grande surpresa. Ela deu um grande salto pra frente em 1997.
ESTA É A SUA ÚLTIMA COPA?
Depende do que acontecer lá na França.

Você nunca pode ter uma unanimidade, mas hoje eu estou tendo um reconhecimento muito grande da imprensa, a não ser aqueles que me perseguem de graça, e todo mundo sabe quais são essas pessoas. Jamais vou falar o nome delas.
