The Broncs scored the first seven points of the second half to get within eight at 37-29, but the Bulldogs responded with seven straight points of their own to push the lead back out to double digits, where it stayed the rest of the game. A 14-2 run pushed the Bulldog advantage to 20 at 57-37, and Butler cruised to the win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Darnell Archey. Arch lit it up in the first half, scoring 14 of his 16 points in the opening 20 minutes. He hit four three-point baskets, and also hit a pair of technical free throws to extend his streak to 66 in a row, seven shy of the NCAA record.
A trio of Bulldogs finished with 12 points. Mike Monserez had 12 points and seven rebounds, Brandon Miller added 12 points and five assists, and Duane Lightfoot finished with 12 points and five rebounds off the bench. Joel Cornette had a solid all-around game, finishing with seven points, six rebounds, and four steals. Lewis Curry added six points, and Avery Sheets had two points off the bench. UTPA was led by Kevin Mitchell's 16 points and seven rebounds.
It was sloppy at times, and I know Coach Lickliter wasn't completely happy with how his team played, but a 19-point win after a week layoff and a long plane ride is not something you'll find me griping about. The Bulldogs committed 13 turnovers, the most since the Wayne State game, and shot just 36% in the second half. But they shot really well in the first half, and held UTPA to 48 points and 31% shooting for the game. We got the "W" and we're 9-0, and that's what's important.
The Bulldogs will now face the winner of the Western Kentucky/Chicago State game. WKU got a big boost with the return of 7'1" center Chris Marcus for tonight's game. Game time for the second round game is Sunday, December 29, at 10 p.m. EST.
