39th Annual Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic - Game 7
BUTLER "Bulldogs" vs. WESTERN KENTUCKY "Hilltoppers"

DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Brandon Miller buried a deep three-pointer with 2.4 seconds remaining to give the Butler Bulldogs a 63-60 victory over Western Kentucky. With the win, the Bulldogs advance to the championship of the Rainbow Classic, to face the winner of Tennessee Tech and Hawaii (the host school). It was a very even contest for the first seven minutes, with neither team able to get a lead bigger than two points. It was 12-10 WKU when the Bulldogs buried four straight three-pointers, two apiece from Mike Monserez and Avery Sheets, to jump out to a 22-12 lead. A Darnell Archey trey put the Bulldogs up 32-17 with just over two minutes to go, but the Hilltoppers went on an 8-0 run to close the half, Butler leading 32-25.

WKU trimmed the lead to four early in the second half at 34-30, but Archey hit a three-pointer and was fouled on a subsequent trey attempt and buried all three free throws to push the Bulldogs lead back to 10 at 40-30. The margin stayed between six and ten for the next several minutes, with Butler leading 53-45 at the 7:37 timeout. That's when WKU made things interesting. Nate Williams dunked an alley-oop off an inbounds play out of the media timeout, and later hit a pair of free throws to get WKU within four at 53-49. Duane Lightfoot had a big tip-in at the 4:05 mark to give the Bulldogs a little breathing room, but Williams made another basket to make it 55-51. Archey hit another three-pointer, but Williams scored yet again at the other end and was fouled, making it 58-53. He missed the free throw, but Filip Videnov got the rebound and put it back in to make it 58-55. Joel Cornette made a layin and was fouled at the other end, but missed the free throw. WKU turned the ball over, but Monserez was unable to convert a tough layup at the other end. The Hilltoppers' Mike Wells converted a conventional three-point play to make it 60-58 with 1:35 to go. Butler was unable to score, and Williams hit yet another basket to tie things up at 60-60 with 27 seconds remaining. Butler Coach Todd Lickliter decided not to call a timeout and let Miller run things. Turned out to be a great decision--Miller dribbled the clock down under five seconds and pulled up from NBA three-point range and drained what proved to be the game-winner with 2.4 seconds to go. WKU was unable to get a shot up after a timeout, and Butler escaped with the win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Miller. This could really go to any number of people, because different people stepped up at key points in the game. But Miller gets the nod for draining the game-winner. It was his only field goal of the game, but it was a big one. He finished with five points.

Archey battled through a 3-of-12 shooting night to finish with a team-high 14 points, and made all five free throws he attempted to extend his consecutive free throw streak to 71, just two shy of the NCAA record. Monserez finished with 12 points and four assists. Sheets hit four three-pointers for 12 points, the best total of his young Butler career. Cornette and Lightfoot added eight points apiece, and Cornette pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists while Lightfoot finished added five rebounds and a pair of steals. Lewis Curry finished with four points. The Hilltoppers were led by Videnov's 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half, and eight rebounds.

The last three minutes were more than a little nerve-wracking, but the Bulldogs got it done once again. Videnov and Williams almost won the game for WKU by themselves, combining for 26 of the Hilltoppers' 35 second-half points. The Bulldogs were able to do just enough to get the win. Make no mistake, that was a very good WKU team they beat, and one that will only get better when a healthy Chris Marcus returns. The Bulldogs are now 10-0, and playing for yet another in-season tournament championship.

As mentioned above, the Bulldogs will square off against the winner of the Hawaii/Tennessee Tech game. Game time for the second round game is 12:30 a.m. (half past midnight on Monday night/Tuesday morning) Eastern time.
