Round 2 of the 2006 Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off

DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

One night after defeating one in-state rival from a major conference, the Butler Bulldogs pulled off quite an encore with a 60-55 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-off, earning a trip to Madison Square Garden in New York City in the process. The first half was a back-and-forth battle with six ties over the first 11 minutes. Butler held its final lead of the opening frame at 13-12 following a pair of Mike Green free throws at the 9:14 mark. IU twice pushed its lead out to five points, the latter coming at 26-21 with just under a minute left. A Green basket pulled the Bulldogs to within three at halftime, 26-23. IU jumped out to a seven point advantage to start the second half, but the Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run to knot the score at 30 apiece. That's when IU seemed to take control of the game. The Hoosiers went on a 15-5 run to take a 45-35 lead, and followed that with a pair of free throws following a technical foul on the Butler bench with 11:45 to go. Facing a 12-point deficit, the Bulldogs were down, but proved they were far from out. The defense held IU scoreless for the next six minutes, and by the time the 3:14 mark rolled around, the Dawgs had gone on a 19-2 run to take a 54-49 lead. D. J. White's tip-in with 2:50 left pulled IU within 3, and following a Brandon Crone missed three-pointer, White hit another basket with just under two minutes left to pull within one at 54-53. Undaunted, Crone sank a three-pointer to push the lead back to four. Following a missed three-pointer, IU fouled Green with a minute to go. Unfortunately, Mike missed both shots and Lance Stemler's jumper with 0:41 left made it 57-55. That set up Butler's final possession. With the shot clock winding down and IU's defense hounding every pass, A. J. Graves was forced to take a desperation three-point shot from well beyond the arc. As former Bulldog Nick Gardner said on the radio broadcast, the bank must have been open late tonight, because Graves' attempt kissed off the glass and into the net, putting the Bulldogs on top 60-55. IU's three-point attempt at the buzzer was no good, and Butler had punched its ticket to the NIT final four in New York City!

PLAYER OF THE GAME: I can't do it. This game defined the very essence of a team win. Every member of the team contributed in some fashion to this victory, and I can't single out any one performance.

Graves led the way with 20 points, overcoming a 4-of-18 shooting night with a perfect 10-for-10 performance from the foul line and adding four steals. Green finished with 17 points and four rebounds. Crone added eight points and three assists. Julian Betko had five points and four rebounds. Marcus Nellems added three points and four rebounds. Drew Streicher had three points, five rebounds and three blocks, and played some of the toughest defense down the stretch on a future NBA player in White that any 6-7, 200-pound former walk-on could have possibly played. Brian Ligon and Willie Veasley added two points apiece. IU was led by White's game-high 22 points.

I'm at a loss for words. With a 12-point deficit, Green on the bench with four fouls and all the momentum swinging to IU, this team refused to give up. There were so many key moments--Veasley's tip-in to give Butler the lead for good; the defense of the entire team in general, and of Streicher in the paint and Veasley up top in particular; Graves' clutch free throw shooting; huge three-pointers from Nellems and Crone; Graves' clinching shot. If you didn't see it, I can't begin to do it justice. Congratulations to the Bulldogs on a hard-fought and well-deserved victory.

Before departing for the Big Apple, the Bulldogs return to Hinkle Fieldhouse for their home opener against NAIA foe Illinois-Springfield. Game time is Saturday, November 18, at 7:00 pm EST.

studpuppy in Denver:
What a great win. How do you shoot 33% from the field, get in huge foul
trouble, play smaller in the paint, and still win a game?!?!? Great free throw
shooting and solid defense!

Mike Davis was a Bulldog fan last night!
