DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

It took overtime, but the Butler Bulldogs survived a tough road contest, holding off the Loyola Ramblers 70-66 at the Gentile Center. The game was nip-and-tuck from the opening tip, with neither team being able to distance itself from the other for most of the opening frame. Butler used a 5-0 run to close the first half and take a 35-27 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs pushed their lead out to 10 early in the second half, but Loyola soon closed the gap. Back-to-back three-pointers from Tom Levin and Blake Schilb pulled the Ramblers within two at 45-43. Loyola tied the game at 50 on a J. R. Blount jumper, then took the lead on a Schilb basket with 6:55 left in regulation. Butler eventually pushed its lead back to three on a conventional three-point play from Mike Green which made it 57-54 Bulldogs at the 2:07 mark. Schilb then scored five unanswered points to put the Ramblers on top 59-57 with 0:25 remaining. A. J. Graves tied the game back up with a pair of free throws. Schilb missed a potential game-winner before the buzzer, and the game went to overtime knotted at 59.

The extra session was by and large the A. J. Graves show. Graves scored Butler's first 10 points in overtime, including consecutive three-pointers to put the Bulldogs up 65-63. It was a short-lived lead, as Schilb answered with a three-pointer of his own to put the Ramblers back on top 66-65 with just under three minutes remaining. Unfortunately for Loyola, that shot marked their final points of the contest, as the Bulldogs held the Ramblers scoreless from that point forward. Graves split a pair of free throws and hit another three-pointer, and a late Pete Campbell free throw set the final margin at 70-66.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. His consecutive free throw streak came to an end at 63 on his first attempt of the night, and he actually missed two foul shots in the game after missing just one all season, but his game-high 26 points and clutch performance in overtime are the real story of this game. He was 5-of-10 from three-point range, and also had three steals.

Butler's other double-figure scorer was Campbell, who finished with 12 points off the bench. Drew Streicher had nine points and five rebounds, as did Mike Green. Brandon Crone had five points, six rebounds, and three steals. Willie Veasley added five points and five rebounds. Brian Ligon finished with four points and a team-high eight rebounds. Loyola was led by Schilb's double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds.

The game featured 12 ties and 17 lead changes. Loyola dominated the glass 48-35, hauling down 25 offensive rebounds for a 23-8 advantage in second chance points. Butler's defense held the Ramblers to 34% shooting, the primary difference in the game for the Bulldogs. Butler shot 45% overall for the game and 37% from three-point range, and never trailed by more than two points the entire contest. A big road win over a quality HL foe.

The Bulldogs next travel to Detroit to face the Titans at Calihan Hall. Game time is Saturday, January 27, at 4:00 p.m. EST.
