DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame an eight-point first half deficit and a rough shooting night to defeat the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers 55-50 at US Cellular Arena. UWM used a 13-4 run to turn a 7-6 Butler lead into a 19-11 Panther advantage with 4:37 left in the half, but the Bulldogs closed the half on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 19 apiece at halftime. The bulk of the second half was nip and tuck, with neither team taking control of the game until Drew Streicher layup with 3:26 remaining broke a 40-40 tie and gave Butler the lead for good at 42-40. The Panthers stayed close, but could get no closer than two down the stretch, and the Bulldogs held on for a 55-50 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Green. Mike had a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

A. J. Graves went over the 1,000-point mark in his Butler career, as his 14 points gave him 1,004 points as a Bulldog. Brandon Crone finished with seven points and three rebounds. Streicher had three huge baskets during a key stretch late in the second half for six points along with three rebounds. Julian Betko added five points and four rebounds. Willie Veasley had four points, while Brian Ligon added three points and three rebounds. UWM was led by Avery Smith's game-high 21 points.

Butler's offense struggled mightily for most of the night. UWM's defense largely disrupted any offensive flow for the Bulldogs, as evidenced by just four Butler assists on 14 field goals. Butler shot just 34% overall and managed only 1-of-10 from three-point range. The turning point was at the end of the first half, when the Bulldogs held the Panthers scoreless over the final four-and-a-half minutes while erasing an eight-point deficit. For the game, the biggest difference came at the free throw line, where Butler shot 70% while the Panthers managed just 52%. That, combined with a 19-2 Bulldog advantage in points off turnovers, got Butler the win.

Butler returns home for its next Horizon League game when the Bulldogs host the Wright State Raiders. Game time is Saturday, January 6, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
