DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS
The Butler Bulldogs swept the season series with Wisconsin-Milwaukee for the first time since the 2000-01 campaign with a 66-47 victory over the Panthers at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 9-0 lead. UWM answered with eight straight points, but the Bulldogs countered with a 10-0 run to take control at 19-8 with 7:23 left in the first half. Ricky Franklin's three-pointer pulled the Panthers back within eight points, but A. J. Graves answered with a three of his own. Butler's lead would not dip below 11 from the point forward. A late three from Graves gave the Bulldogs a 34-18 lead at halftime. Butler's largest lead was 24 points, reached twice in the second half, the latter instance coming at 47-23 with 13:22 to go following a Pete Campbell three-pointer. UWM pulled to within 16 at 49-33 at the 8:57 mark, but would get no closer as the Bulldogs cruised to a 66-47 win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. The junior guard led all scorers with 20 points.
Mike Green continued his solid play of late, finishing with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Campbell had nine points and three assists off the bench. Brandon Crone added eight points and three rebounds. Willie Veasley and Drew Streicher each had four points off the bench, with Veasley adding three rebounds. Brian Ligon had three points and five rebounds, while Elliot Engelmann added a pair of free throws for two points. Julian Betko finished with two points and three rebounds. UWM was led by Franklin's 17 points.
After struggling to a 34% shooting night at Milwaukee earlier this season, including just 1-of-10 from three-point range, it was good to see Butler raise those numbers to 49% and 33%, respectively. UWM still defended the perimeter well, but the Bulldogs did a much better job of slipping the screener to the basket and getting easy baskets underneath. Butler also crashed the offensive glass well, holding a 20-8 advantage in second chance points.
Butler hits the road for a pair of games in Ohio next week. Up first are the Cleveland State Vikings. Game time is Thursday, February 8, at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on SportsTime Ohio.
