MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Head coach Brad Stevens was victorious in his debut on the Butler sidelines as the Bulldogs defeated the host Ball State Cardinals 61-45 at Worthen Arena in Muncie in the regular season opener for both squads. Butler never trailed, and the game's only tie came at 2-2 before the Bulldogs scored seven unanswered points to take the lead for good. Ball State appeared to set the halftime score at 28-17 on a late layup by Peyton Stovall, but Stevens quickly called timeout with 1.2 seconds left. Elliot Engelmann, substituted in at the timeout, inbounded the ball and delivered a baseball pass to Matt Howard, who quickly tapped it back to Pete Campbell, who proceeded to bury a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Bulldogs a 31-17 lead at the break. Butler pulled out to a 17-point advantage at 38-21 with 14:43 to go, but the Cardinals answered with a 10-1 run to cut the lead to eight. That would be as close as BSU would get, as an 11-2 Butler run, keyed by three three-pointers from Campbell, pushed the lead back out to 17 at 50-33, and the Bulldogs cruised to a 61-45 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Campbell. The Muncie native shined in his hometown, leading all scorers with 17 points (including 5-of-11 from three-point range) to go along with five rebounds.

Matt Howard finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and a team-high four assists in his Butler debut. Mike Green had 11 points and six rebounds, while A. J. Graves added 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists.. Drew Streicher and Julian Betko each finished with four points and four rebounds. Freshman Shawn Vanzant did not score but played nine minutes, answering the question of whether or not he would be redshirted. BSU was led by Anthony Newell's 16 points and Stovall's double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.

It was good to see the Dawgs jump out to an early lead, weather a second half comeback, and maintain control of the game throughout. Butler held Ball State to 38% shooting, including just 1-of-14 (7%) from behind the arc, while shooting 46% and 36%, respectively. Rebounds were basically even (32-31 Butler), as were turnovers (11 for BU, 10 for BSU). Congratulations to Coach Stevens on a successful debut.

Butler returns home for the first of three regular season home games in 2007 when they host the Indiana State Sycamores. Game time is Wednesday, November 14, at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
