MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs earned their first Horizon League tournament championship since 2001 and an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament with a 70-55 victory over the Cleveland State Vikings at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler never trailed, jumping out to a 7-0 lead and leading by as many as 14 at 20-6 at the 13:24 mark of the first half. The Vikings slowly chipped away at their deficit, eventually pulling to a 34-34 tie, but could not take the lead as a pair of free throws from Mike Green and A. J. Graves gave Butler a 38-34 halftime advantage. CSU held a 17-12 rebounding edge at the break, including 11 offensive boards leading to 17-4 advantage in second chance points. The Vikings pulled within two at 43-41 but would get no closer as Butler pushed its lead to double figures, where it would remain for the final nine minutes of the game. A late Ben Slaton three-pointer gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead at 70-52, and a free throw and dunk from Norris Cole set the final score at 70-55.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Drew Streicher. With all due respect to Green, who matched career-highs in both points and rebounds and was named tournament MVP, I'm going with Streicher, who nailed three three-pointers en route to 11 points along with three rebounds and three assists. With his teammates attracting the bulk of the defensive attention, Drew found himself alone quite a bit, and attempted a career-high seven field goals, connecting on four.

Green was outstanding yet again, finishing with 24 points and 13 rebounds along with three assists. Matt Howard added 16 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Graves had five points. Willie Veasley had four points off the bench, while Pete Campbell, Zach Hahn, and Slaton added three apiece. Avery Jukes finished with one point. CSU was led by J'Nathan Bullock's 21 points and nine rebounds.

Congratulations to the Bulldogs on the Horizon League championship! Congratulations also to Green, Howard, and Streicher for being named to the all-tournament team.

Butler will now await Selection Sunday to see where it will be sent in the NCAA tournament. CBS will unveil the brackets live on Sunday, March 16, at 6:00 p.m. EDT.
