MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

A pair of seniors led the way on Senior Day as the Butler Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a 65-31 rout over the Detroit Titans at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler jumped out to a 16-3 lead, keyed by four three-pointers by senior Pete Campbell, and never looked back. After the Titans closed to within 25-18 at halftime, the Bulldogs opened second half with a 15-4 run to lead 40-22. Detroit scored three unanswered points to pull within 15, but would get no closer as the margin soon swelled past 20. With 1:34 left, Butler called timeout to allow the five seniors to check back into the game one final time for their curtain call. They inbounded the ball and Campbell simply placed the ball back down on the floor out of bounds, stopping the clock and allowing the quintet to leave the floor as a group to a standing ovation. Butler's biggest lead of the game came at the final score, 65-31.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Campbell and Mike Green. The senior duo was simply spectacular. Campbell tied a career-best with eight three-pointers (on 12 attempts) for a game-high 24 points, while Green finished an assist shy of a triple-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds (tying a career-high), and nine assists.

Willie Veasley had eight points and four rebounds off the bench. Shawn Vanzant added four points and four rebounds, while Matt Howard also finished with four points. Senior Julian Betko and Elliot Engelmann each had three points. Senior Drew Streicher had two points and four rebounds, while fellow senior A. J. Graves added two points. Avery Jukes also had two points, as did sophomore walk-on Alex Anglin, who scored the first points of his Butler career. Detroit was led by Chris Hayes' nine points.

The 31 points allowed were the lowest opposing point total since Butler defeated Canterbury 52-30 in the 1947-48 season. Butler attacked Detroit's zone very effectively, and Campbell wound up causing most of the damage. The Bulldogs had a 35-28 rebounding advantage and had 16 assists on 24 made field goals.

Butler has a week off before beginning Horizon League tournament play. As the #1 seed, the Bulldogs will host the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds next Friday and Saturday, following opening round play at campus sites this coming Tuesday. If I've done the tiebreakers properly, #5 seed Milwaukee will host #8 Loyola and #4 UIC will host #9 Youngstown State, with the winners of those games squaring off Friday at Hinkle. Butler will then face the winner of that game. On the other side of the bracket, #3 Wright State hosts #10 Detroit and #6 Valparaiso hosts #7 Green Bay. The winners will then meet at Hinkle on Friday, with the victor playing #2 Cleveland State Saturday. Hope to see you there.
