MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS
The Butler Bulldogs overcame a pair of early nine-point deficits and held off a determined Florida Gulf Coast squad, pulling away late from the host Eagles for a 78-66 win at Alico Arena. FGCU scored the game's first six points, and led by nine at 11-2 and again at 19-10. Butler scored eight straight points to pull within one, then took its first lead at 25-23 on a pair of Mike Green free throws with 5:07 left in the half. The two squads had a total of five ties and four lead changes en route to a 33-33 halftime score. The Bulldogs broke a 39-39 tie with a 10-2 run to lead 49-41 with 15:22 to go. The Eagles responded with an 8-0 run to tie it back up at 49. The game's final tie came at 54 apiece before the Bulldogs took the lead for good with a 9-2 run to lead 63-56 with 6:21 left. FGCU made one final run to pull within two at 64-62 at the 4:40 mark, but would get no closer. Butler closed the game on a 14-4 run, including a perfect 12-of-12 at the free throw line, to seal a 78-66 win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Green. Mike had 16 points, six rebounds, and six assists. He also made three steals and was 8-of-9 at the foul line.
A. J. Graves led a balanced Butler offense with 17 points, including a perfect 9-of-9 at the charity stripe. Matt Howard added 12 points, while Julian Betko also finished with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range along with five rebounds. Drew Streicher had eight points and a pair of dunks. Avery Jukes had four points, while Zach Hahn and Pete Campbell finished with three points each. Shawn Vanzant had a pair of free throws for two points, and Willie Veasley added one point and five rebounds. FGCU was led by Casey Wohlleb's game-high 24 points.
FGCU shot 50% overall and 44% from three-point range, each of which were 10 points higher than the Eagles' season averages coming into the game. Both teams shot 28 free throws; Butler made 26 (93%), while FGCU connected on just on just 17 (61%, slightly better than their season average). That was primarily the difference in the game. Butler shot fairly well--45% overall and 36% from behind the arc--and outrebounded the Eagles 29-25.
Butler returns last year's BracketBusters matchup at Hinkle with a trip to Southern Illinois to face the Salukis. Game time is Friday, December 28, at 9:00 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
