MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs outscored the Ohio State Buckeyes 54-21 over the final 27 minutes to overcome a 14-point first half deficit and roll to a 65-46 victory at a sold-out Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler's offense struggled mightily in the first half, with the Bulldogs missing their first 15 three-point attempts. Ohio State jumped out to a 15-5 lead. The Buckeyes would eventually push their lead out to 14 at 25-11 with 7:06 left in the first half. A. J. Graves finally ended Butler's drought from the perimeter with a three-pointer ahead of the buzzer to pull the Bulldogs within 10 at halftime, 30-20. Butler shot just 26% in the opening half, compared to 65% for the Buckeyes. However, Butler forced 14 Ohio State turnovers to keep the deficit from ballooning further. The Bulldogs finally found their touch in the second half. After Kosta Koufos' layup to start the half put the Buckeyes up by a dozen, Butler scored 9 unanswered points on a pair of three-pointers from Pete Campbell and another from Mike Green to pull within three at 32-29 with 16:40 remaining. Butler eventually forced the game's first tie at 38 apiece. Following a David Lighty tip-in, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good at 45-40 with 7:24 left. A Koufos basket cut the deficit to three, but another 7-0 Butler spurt gave the Bulldogs a 10-point lead, 52-42. After Jamar Butler made a pair of free throws, the Bulldogs closed the game on a 13-2 run to earn a 65-46 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Matt Howard. The freshman almost single-handedly kept the Bulldogs' offense afloat in the first half, scoring 13 of the team's 20 points. He finished with a career-best and game-high 23 points along with seven rebounds. He was 9-of 13 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line in 29 minutes.

Green finished with 15 points, all in the second half, along with eight assists and four rebounds. Graves overcame a 1-for-9 first half to finish with 14 points, three rebounds, and three steals. Campbell added with eight points and five rebounds before leaving the game with an apparent knee injury. Head coach Brad Stevens had no update on Pete's condition after the game. Drew Streicher had five points and four assists. Julian Betko and Willie Veasley each pulled down three rebounds. Ohio State was led by Koufos' 16 points and seven rebounds.

Howard's effort was tremendous. He picked apart the interior of the Buckeye zone and continually found his way to the basket. After an abysmal 1-of-17 start from three-point range, Butler made eight of its final 13 from behind the arc. The defense in the second half was phenomenal. Ohio State managed just 16 points on 29% shooting, including 0-of-7 from three-point range, and committed an additional 10 turnovers, giving the Buckeyes 24 for the game, more than double their 11.2 average. The atmosphere was amazing. Stevens credited the crowd for helping keep the team in the game in the first half even when the shots weren't falling. A great night of basketball at the Fieldhouse.

Butler opens Horizon League play next week with a pair of road games. Up first is a trip to Detroit to face the Titans. Game time is Thursday, December 6, at 7:05 p.m. EST.
