MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS
A. J. Graves hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Butler Bulldogs a 57-55 victory over Southern Illinois at SIU Arena. Butler got out to a 15-7 lead with 13:07 to go in the opening frame, and held that lead until the Salukis tied it at 21 apiece seven minutes later. SIU held a 27-23 before the Bulldogs closed the half on an 8-2 run to hold a 31-29 halftime advantage. The Salukis scored the first six points of the second half to regain the lead. Butler tied the score three times thereafter, but did not pull ahead again until a Pete Campbell three-pointer at the 3:05 mark broke a 47-47 tie. The Bulldogs led 52-49 when back-to-back three-pointers by SIU's Joshua Bone and Wesley Clemmons put the Salukis on top 55-52 with just over a minute remaining. A Mike Green basket pulled Butler within one. Tyrone Green missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving Butler a chance to take the lead, but Matt Howard committed a traveling violation at the other end to give SIU the ball back with a 55-54 lead and just over six second left. Butler again fouled on the inbound, and Bryan Mullins missed the front end of his one-and-one. There was a lane violation whistled on the missed shot against the Salukis, giving Butler the ball out of bounds with a little over five seconds remaining and no timeouts. The ball was inbounded to Graves, who dribbled to midcourt, crossed over to the left side of the court and took a shot from around 30 feet which rattled around the rim several times before dropping through the net and giving the Bulldogs a 57-55 victory.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. He struggled from the floor for most of the night, but came up big when the Bulldogs needed it the most. He finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
Green led the way with 19 points, four assists and three rebounds. Matt Howard had 15 points and five rebounds. Campbell had nine points off the bench. Julian Betko added two points and five rebounds, while Drew Streicher had two points and three rebounds. SIU was led by Bone's 19 points.
SIU's defense limited Butler's perimeter attack, so the Bulldogs responded by attacking the basket and getting to the foul line. Butler was 21-of-30 from the charity stripe, while the Salukis were just 3-of-12. Bone was 5-of-7 from three-point range for SIU; the rest of the team was 1-for-13. After being outrebounded by eight in the first half, Butler battled to a 17-17 tie on the boards after halftime. A tremendous road win for the Bulldogs in a difficult place for visiting teams to come away with a victory.
Horizon League play resumes in earnest as the calendar flips to 2008. Up first is a home game against HL newcomer Valparaiso. Game time is Saturday, January 5, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Have a safe and happy new year, and hope to see you at Hinkle.
