MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame a slow start, built a lead, and weathered a late comeback attempt in defeating the Valparaiso Crusaders 73-65 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Valpo scored the game's first four points and held an early 7-2 lead. The Crusaders pushed their lead to as many as nine points on two occasions, at 15-6 and again at 24-15 with 7:40 left in the half. At the media timeout, Shawn Vanzant checked in and Butler switched to a zone defense. Vanzant sparked the Bulldog defense, as three of Valpo's next four possessions--the three in which they played zone--resulted in turnovers, and Butler went on a 9-2 run to pull within two at 26-24 at the 5:00 mark. Butler took its first lead of the game at 31-29 on a Mike Green three-pointer with 1:30 remaining in the half. A Jarryd Loyd layup tied the game at 31 apiece at the half. Butler took the lead for good on another Green three-pointer to make it 38-36 with 15:06 to go. The Bulldogs' lead swelled to 13 at 58-45, and they led 63-51 with 2:29 remaining. Valpo twice pulled within five points in the final minute but could get no closer, and the Bulldogs held on for a 73-65 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Green. What more could you possibly ask for from your point guard? He tied a career high with 24 points, scoring from the perimeter (3-of-4 from three-point range) and off dribble penetration (11-of-14 at the foul line). He pulled down eight rebounds, dished four assists, and made five steals.

Matt Howard battled through a 3-of-9 shooting performance en route to 12 points and six rebounds. Pete Campbell had 10 points off the bench. Drew Streicher added nine points. Willie Veasley had eight points and three rebounds. A. J. Graves was just 2-of-10 from the floor, finishing with five points, but added three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Zach Hahn also finished with five points. Valpo was led by Loyd's 15 points.

Green's effort was quite impressive, but the bench also played a big role for Butler as well at both ends of the floor, particularly in the first half. With the offense struggling and Howard in foul trouble, a spark was needed, and the reserves delivered. For the game, Valpo held the Bulldogs to just under 40% shooting while shooting 48% themselves, and the Crusaders held a 32-29 rebounding advantage. Butler overcame that by forcing 16 Valpo turnovers and outscoring the Crusaders 28-10 at the foul line.

Butler has little time to enjoy the win, as they hit the road for a trip to Loyola to battle the Ramblers. Game time is Monday, January 7, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
