The Many Worlds of Diane Mullen
Star Trek!
Star Trek is awesome! A real win for JJ Abrams! The movie is very well done, well written and well acted. It managed to keep the adventurous feel of the original (I'm a Doctor, Jim, not a physicist!), while providing a whole new beginning, and opening new avenues for this franchise to go. Karl Urban did an excellent job as 'Bones' McCoy, managing to bring characteristics begun by Deforest Kelley into an updated character. It is amazing how much Zachary Quinto looks like a young Leonard Nimoy - and had the mannerism down pat. I'm looking forward to a whole new series of movies with these new actors. Whoot!!!
Wow. Less than a month, and we have another sad day for Star Trek fans. Ricard Montalban (Khan Noonien Singh from the TOS episode "Space Seed" and the second movie "The Wrath of Khan") passed away on January 14, 2009. He was 88 years old. For more information on this fine actor, go to IMDb at Ricardo Montalban
Once again, another icon in the world of Star Trek has passed away from this mortal coil. Majel Barrett Roddenberry died on December 18, 2008. Not only was she the wife of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, but she is well known for her many roles on the various series. In the inital pilot, Majel appeared as "Number One" the emotionless first officer under Captain Christopher Pike. In the original series, she was "Nurse Christine Chapel", well known for her crush on Spock. In The Next Generation, Majel became the extravagent Lwaxanna Troi, mother of Counselor Deanna Troi. In all of the many series, Majel was also the voice of the computer. Never again will we be able to hear her voice. She was a strong woman, and a very large part of Star Trek. We will miss her. For more information on the woman, and her career, go to IMDb at Majel Barrett's IMDb entry.
Trekkers have a new reason to morn today (Wednesday, July 20, 2005) as the second actor from the original series passed away this morning. James Doohan, better known as Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott, died of pneumonia and other complications. Never again will we see Scotty drinking something "green." He will be missed. For more information on the man and his career, go to IMDb at James Doohan's IMDb entry
Trekkers the world over will mourn the death of DeForest Kelly. Mr. Kelly died on June 11, 1999 of a long term illness. A wonderful man, and a well-loved actor, he will be missed. What will Captain Kirk do without Dr. 'Bones' McCoy? Take a moment in silence to remember him,and he will never truly die. Yes, I am a Star Trek fan, otherwise known as a Trekker. (Want to know the difference between Trekkers and Trekkies? Here's where to go! Please keep in mind that this is intended as a joke and is not meant to offend anyone.) I love all versions of Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS), Star Trek: The Next Generation (STNG), Deep Space Nine (DS9), Star Trek: Voyager (STV) and the movies. Enterprise has proven to be a worthy addition to the Star Trek universe ... I love Scott Bakula anyway, but he makes a terrific Captain Jonathan Archer! I think one of my favorites on that show is Porthos (the Captain's beagle!).
That said, I must make one exception: I did not like Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. I thought the plot was excreable, the directing deplorable and the acting laughable.
Now, back to the good stuff. I personally think STNG and STV are the best, with Enterprise and DS9 is not far behind. Of course TOS will remain forever in a special place in my heart.
I could go on and on about the characters, the villains, the ships, why I like Star Trek, et cetera, ad nauseum. I'm sure you don't want to hear about my opinions, because you probably have your own. Anyway here's the really interesting stuff: Web sites about Star Trek, official and otherwise.
