Games Party Tips

Everything for the games should be made ahead so the games can quickly move from one to the next. Filling the water balloons is time consuming. Have lots of help and do it in shifts. Average about 200 + filled balloons.

The best age range is 6 - 10. Boys prefer messy games more than girls.

Give ribbons after each game. It is too expensive to buy them, so purchase long spools of 2 inch thick inexpensive ribbon at a craft store and make your own. Cut about three inch pieces with decorative scissors and mark the categories with a permanent marker. Give each kid a decorated name ribbon, attached to their shirt when they first come to the party. Then make first (blue), second (red), third (yellow) place and participant (white or orange) ribbons for each event. For younger kids, ALL get a ribbon for each event. For older kids, ribbons are just for winners, or when there are no winners, all get participant ribbons.

The ribbon for the first win is stapled to the bottom of the name tag ribbon. Subsequent ribbons are stapled to the bottom of each previous ribbon, so that at the end of the games, they have a long steam of ribbons to take home as a party favor. You may wish to remove each players stream of ribbons before the pie fight and water ballon fight begin, or they may get ripped.

The yard will be a mess from the pie fight cream and all. The cream will not harm plants. The party guests should have cleaned up most of the toilet paper, pies and popped balloons. Running the sprinkler or waiting for a rain will clean off all the excess mud and pie mess in the yard.

When parents come to pick up their kids, tell them to wash the messy pie clothes and towels soon, as the clothes will be further ruined if left to sit at the bottom of a hamper for a few days.

Send Messy Games pictures to the guests in thank you notes.

Be sure to stress that kids are to come in their oldest clothes, and to bring an old towel and a change of clothes in a plastic bag. Their messy clothes will be returned in that plastic bag.

The most important part of making a party a success is planning the activities so NO ONE gets bored. Everyone enjoys games that are fun and easy to play. Become familiar with the rules and directions so you can easily explain them to the players. Keep game sessions short and lively. Know your guests! No one likes to play games and have NO chance of winning. Get an idea of any PRE- party preperations you might need so all you have to do is HAVE FUN! If its a messy game let your guests KNOW so they won't wear the GOOD clothes :)

When setting a date for a party, always check to make sure your friends have not chosen the date in question. This would result in poor turnouts for both affairs. Do not necessarily rule out mid-week partys. This does not cut into weekend family plans and will normally ensure partys will end as scheduled. As for party durations, two and a half hours is ample time for six year olds and two hours is plenty for 3-5 year olds. If planning a party outing (eg. a trip to a theater or playground) always let parents know what the appropriate attire will be. A child would certainly be miserable in a white frilly dress at the park.
