JUSTINS BIRTH STORY

Since Justin was our first child, we were very excited
during my pregnancy with him. I couldn't wait to
go through labor and delivery, and take the step into
real motherhood!

His due date was October 24,1994. When I would go to
my weekly vistis that month, we found out that the
baby had not dropped and that my cervix wasn't showing
any signs of going into labor.

On his due date, My doctor, Dr. Gibson, sent me for
another Ultrasound to check fluid levels. As I watched
the screen, I thought it looked like there wasn't much
fluid. After the ultrasound, the technician said that
Dr. Gibson wanted to see me, so I went back to his office.

When I got there, he called me right in, and proceeded
to tell me that there was very little fluid, and my
body was not showing any signs of labor. He said he
reccomended a C-section. I was stunned! That was the
last thing I expected to hear! I asked him if we could
induce labor first, and then do the C-section. I had
heard that it was good for babies to go through labor
first. Dr. Gibson didn't think it was a good idea
because of the low fluid, and plus the baby had not
dropped and my cervix was not softened. So we scheduled
the C-section for Thursday, October 27, 1994.

We had to be at the hospital by 6:00 am. On the 45 minute
drive there, I was feeling, excited, anxious, scared and happy
all at once.

When we arrived they took me to a room and "prepped" me for
surgery. They put an I.V. in and all that kind of fun stuff.

I wanted a spinal so I could stay awake so I could greet
the sweet little guy who loved to push on my bladder
the last couple of months! Plus I wanted my husband Chris
to be in there to greet him too.

After the anesthesiologist administered the spinal, the doctors,
Dr. Sandler and Dr. Gibson, got to work. At 7:56 am, I heard
one of the doctors say, "Well, look who's here!" my mind
was a little groggy, because the anesthesiologist had
some trouble doing the spinal, so he gave me a little bit of
some other drug, and I thought, a little indignantly, someone
had just come walking into the OR! I thought, "Who in the heck
would just come waltzing into the OR during an operation!"
I was a little indignant until I heard that wonderful cry, and
I realized he meant that Justin was born! HA!HA!HA! I
still laugh about that to this day!

Justin was 6 pounds 14oz. and was 19 inches long. When
they brought him over for me to see, I thought my heart would burst!
He was sooo beautiful, and perfect, and he was ours!

In the recovery room I felt really weak, and I couldn't hold
him yet, although I really wished I could. Chris brought Justin
out to meet his new family. Then came back in to be with me.

I wanted to be a mother for a long time, and now, my dream was
coming true. When I finally got to hold my dear, sweet, wonderful
child, and was breastfeeding him, I felt whole, and at peace,
like nothing could ever ruin that moment. We were finally
a real family!!
