ARIEL
THE LITTLE MERMAID

A LITTLE MERMAID SELECTION FOR YOU

I have been a fan of the story of
The Little Mermaid
since my mother made me read the book.
I have read it many times over the years and I rediscover the novel each and every time I do.

When Walt Disney Productions announced that they were going to make it into an animated movie, I was a bit disturbed.
However, I packed the kids into the car and we went the second day that it was released.
And was I surprised!
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie!

The movie was loosely based on the novel by
Hans Christian Anderson.
Ariel is the youngest of seven sisters:
Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Attina, Adella, Alana and Ariel.

I did read in a Disney magazine that Ariel's sisters names were chosen for a variety of reasons...

Aquata - Obviously related to water and traced though Latin.

Arista - Related to the roots for the word family containing aristocracy, aristocrat, etc. Conferring meaning of a noble or high birth.

Adele - Related to root words for "Noble".

Alana - Alan (Menken) with an "a".

Attina - Borrowed from Alan Menken's rock opera "Atina, Evil Queen of the Galaxy."

Andrina - Related to the meaning "sword."

Ariel - the name of the sprite (spirit) in Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and means "lioness of God" in Hebrew.
