HALLEY's COMET
Halley's Comet will visit the earth just 13 millions miles above the atmosphere on 20 May 1910. Astronomer, Sir Edmond Halley (1656-1742) correctly predicted when it would appear and hence was named Halley's Comet. Many people, especially in the US fear it is the end of the world, and passengers on a moving trolly jumped off when a brick hit the roof. They would shout "Comet" and leap. The next time the comet will appear over the heavens will be in 1986.

Not yet Nationwide, Spokane, Washington celebrates an idea that Mrs. John B. Dodd had to celebrate Father's Day. She wants to set aside the third Sunday of June as this Holiday and she hopes it will spread nationwide.

 W. DeBois was a key figure in developing the NAACP, (National Advancement of Colored People) in 1910. He was 48 years old at the time and devoted his life fighting for equality for the black people in the US. He was also a Professor at Atlantic University and is working fulltime with the NAACP headquarters.

 The Mono Lisa, a famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci, was stole on 22 August, 1911 from the french museum, Louvre. Da Vinci, from Florence, Italy, painted the Mona Lisa in 1504 at the age of 52. The painting was stolen during the night and the Louvre personnel could not understand how someone could have stolen it with their extensive security system in place.

The first Hollywood Studio was formed in October, 1911 in California by the Nestor Film Company. With the sunshine year round, it provides excellent lighting for filming and fast becomes the favorite place to make pictures. Nestor Film Company could be found on Sunset and Gower and the building use to be a tavern that was shut down.

 The sculpture of Queen Nefertiti was found in December 1912 by a German archaeologist. It is believed to be a life like portrait of her done about 3,000 years ago in the time that Pharaoh Akhenaton IV, her husband, ruled. They lived in around 1360 B.C. |
One shot started the European War. It was August 4, 1914, at 11 o'clock that Great Britian declared war on Germany when an assassin on 28 June killed the heir to the Austrian throne, Franz Ferdinand, in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Germany was trying to get as many colonies under them and Britian wanted to protect its empire.
General Joseph Joffre and his men drove the Germans back when they decided to invade France via Belguim. Shortly after the attack by the allies protecting Paris, the Germans were ordered to retreat to the Aisne River. There they dug themselves into trenches as did the allies.

 He was known as Buffalo Bill to the world and would supply buffalo meat to the crew building the railroad. William F. Cody died January 10, 1917 at the age of 70 years. He started a show called the Wild West Show in 1883 with Indian fights and stagecoach raids. |
Baron Manfred von Richthofen, known as the Red Baron died April 21, 1918 in a dog fight in Somme. He was a feared German Ace pilot and got his name the Red Baron from a red Fokke Dr. 1 triplane he flew.

 The War is over! On 11 November 1918 an armistice had been agreed to and at 11 o'clock the guns stopped firing and church bells rang. President Woodrow Wilson published his statement of war aims in the form of 14 points. They included free and open negotiations between nations, reduction of weapons of war, free trade and freedom of the seas, and restoration of lands occupied by Germany. The last point was establishing the League of Nations. |
