This is my story about an Angel that was sent by God to save my three year old son.
The year was 1979 in Bay City, Texas. My family was preparing
to go to the drive-in movies. My three year old son, Lew, climbed up onto the sink to wash his hands. He fell backwards and came running to me crying. (What we did not realize was that he had hit the back of his head at the most sensitive spot that can cause death.) He soon got over his tears, and his two step brothers, baby sister, my husband and I continued to get ready and went to the movies.
During the movie, the older boys took Lew to the park section of the drive-in, and there they played on the swings. While Lew was swinging he fell off the swing. The older boys brought him to the car. Lew was not responding, and was turning white. We rushed to the hospital's Emergency room. The doctors checked him and could not get him to respond. It was during this time that the nurse kept asking us if he had hit the back of his head. Finally one of the older boys remembered when he fell from the sink he had hit the back of his head. The doctor told us that the hospital in Bay City did not have the special equipment that was needed for head injuries, and that they were going to transport him by Helicopter to Galveston. They explained that he needed immediate help. When they radioed for a helicopter they found out that they were fogged in, and that we would have to go by ambulance. The doctors prepared us for our son dying during the transport. One of the nurses said she would travel with us to Galveston since she was going off duty. Only one of us could go with Lew in the ambulance, so I went. My husband had called his sister to come get the other three children to stay with her, and he followed behind in our car.
It was late at night, and we traveled over 90-100 mph with the siren going. We did not even slow down when we drove through the many little towns. The drive is usually 1 1/2 hours, but it only took 45 minutes. I sat in the front with the driver, and the nurse was in the back watching Lew with all the tubes attached. The nurse let me know several times that there was still no response. I sat in the front seat and prayed the whole trip. I was so scared for my sons life. Just as we reached the entrance to Galveston city limits I saw this beautiful being of light that sat on the back right side of the ambulance next to Lew. A peace flooded me with assurance that Lew would be fine, and then it left as quick as it came. Immediately the nurse said that his vital signs were improving. As we reached the hospital and the attendants were taking his bed into the hospital Lew sat up and started trying to take the tubes off his arms. They were having a hard time keeping him down. They took him in for head injury tests, and there was no signs of anything wrong. In fact they told me that the doctors in Bay City were crazy because there was nothing wrong with him. So they released him and we drove back home.
I have told many people the Miracle that happened in that ambulance, and that God saved my little boys life. Today he is a wonderful handsome man, 23 years old. Lew has always had the most peaceful spirit. He is so loving and giving, a true blessing from God. He has never caused us any problems, and even helped us all during his high school working days. He acheived all the requirements of becoming an Eagle Scout at the age of 13. He saved a boys life during a Scout meeting by preforming the Heimlich maneuver. The boy was chocking on a large marshmellow during a marshmellow eating contest. While the boy was chocking and turning blue the adults just watched. Lew ran over and got behind him and made the marshmellow fly out of his mouth and across the room. Lew was only 12. He was given the Life Saving Merit Badge, and made a speech in front of the school's PTA meeting. Lew skipped the eleventh grade, and graduated a year early, while holding down a night time job. He was given the first "Roo Spirit Award" for Baseball at Killeen, Texas High School. During the Coach's speach he said that most people just talk the talk, but Lew walked the walk! It was during his last year in school that Lew had the boys in athletics sign a petition stating that they "would" pray before their sports games. Many nearby city schools were making city and school board rules that made it against school policy for the children to pray at school or during any athletic games. An article was written in the newspaper about Lew's petition, and the city council was the first in Texas to pass a city ordinance that stated that the children were allowed to pray at school and during their athletic games.
Lew has recently become the youngest employee in his company to become a manager. He continues to have high values and a strong Christian faith. I am so Thankful to God for allowing me to be his mother and for using His special Angels to be touched by God's healing. There is no doubt that I believe in Angels!
