By Rev. RUSTY WELLER
God is real! Jesus is alive! And the Holy
Spirit works wonders in the human heart!
That’s the truth of Easter, the whole truth
and nothing but the truth, so help me God.
Not warm, fuzzy bunnies. Not candy-filled
eggs. Not selfish dashes of unbridled greed.
Not new clothes worn to impress people
rather than God.
Too many Christians today, having strayed from the truth of the
Resurrection, are suffering from the error of Easter tradition. To
them Jesus represents a warm, fuzzy feeling on Sunday mornings,
when they open a plastic egg to snack on a tidbit of spiritual candy
after a mad rush to church.
Think about it -- to an embarrassing number of church-goers,
Jesus is little more than a weekly chocolate bunny, sweet to the
ear but offering no spiritual nutrition for the week ahead. No
wonder America is in the sad shape it is, for too many have a
form of godliness that denies God’s power.
God is real! The great I AM who spoke from a burning bush,
parted the Red Sea and poured fire down upon the altar, yes,
God of the Bible is an inescapable reality. And not just on
Sunday mornings, but every moment of every day.
Not only that, God is always available, lovingly waiting for us
to turn to Him with the little details of our lives. That we often
don’t realize or honor that fact doesn’t make it any less true.
God has great plans for each of us, wonderful adventures ready
to begin. All we have to do, as born-again believers, is accept
the fact that Sovereign God is real and wants our undistracted
attention.
You see, there are two great questions to life. Perhaps you’ve
heard and correctly answered the first: Will you or won’t you
accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord? But did you know
there’s a second question: Will you or won’t you do as Jesus
directs?
Pews are filled with people who’ve said yes to the first question,
but no to the second. In doing so, they aren’t applying the truth
of Easter to their daily lives. And that’s sad because, truth is,
Jesus is alive. You might ask me how I know Jesus lives -- He
lives within my heart.
And that’s the truth. When people ask Jesus into their heart, He
brings in the Holy Spirit. So,thanks to the Spirit, we have Jesus
in our hearts, and thus potentially in control of our minds and our
actions. The Bible says Christ Jesus, while preparing places for us
in heaven, sits at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us.
The Holy Spirit, our Counselor and Comforter, takes our prayers
up to God, and conveys His answers back down to us. Because
God is real, Jesus is very much alive, and the Holy Spirit thus is
at work, accomplish the Lord’s will through us.
The Spirit bestows amazing spiritual gifts and serves as our guide,
translating and applying Scripture, reminding us of what Jesus says
while testing what others say.
No heart is too hard to be softened by the Holy Spirit. No mind is
too stubborn to yield under His influence. What’s more, no task is
too difficult for us to accomplish with the Spirit’s help.
Taken together -- the facts that God is real, that Jesus is alive
and that the Holy Spirit changes our hearts -- the truth of Easter
works just as the Bible says it does. People can be born again and
spared the fires of Hell. They can say yes to the second question
and let the Spirit make Jesus the Lord of their lives.
They can learn of God’s wonderful plan and take magnificent
steps of faith to put it in motion. They can “graduate” from
Sunday School and begin serving Jesus. They can do whatever
God calls them to do -- all because of the truth of Easter.
If you haven't said yes to the first question, then invite Jesus into
your heart right here and now. If you haven’t said yes to the
second, then yield to the living King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Trust in the truth of Easter and ask what He would have you do.
