A LITTLE HISTORY

What You See Is What You Get!

There are many islands in the Bahamas. Well, to be precise there are more than 700 of these. Out of these 700, only 27 of them are inhabited. The chief city of the Bahamas is Nassau, which is located on the wonderful island of New Providence.

I know that you would just love to know some history of the Bahamas. Well, I am no historian but I can tell you a little of what I know of the Bahamas. To start off with, we were once under English rule and just broke away from them on July 10th 1973. I guess that means that as an independent country, we are relatively still young. We also didn't have to fight for our freedom, we politely asked and it was granted. See, this proves that you don't have to fight for everything in order to get it!

As an independent nation, we don't have very many resources. As a matter a fact, we don't have any real natural resources anymore, that we could make real big bucks off of. So since we can't use the land to get what we want, we have decided to use people. This comes in the form of our two main industries, which are tourism and banking.

Tourism is our main industry and I can tell you right now that we are very proud of it. We pull in about 1.5-2 million tourists to our shores every year. Doesn't sound like much, does it? Well, we prosper from tourism because we make sure that the tourist have a hell of a time and spend loads of their money as well. See, in this way, nobody loses anything! Practically everything everything in the Bahamas is related to tourism some how and this is why we have to make sure that the tourists enjoy themselves.

Banking is the other major industry that we have. We get foreigners to put their money in our banks. You might say, "Well why would they want to put their money in your banks?" They put their greens in our banks because we offer that special word when one deposits his or her money. This word is called "INTEREST". I am very sure that anyone would love to get money for letting someone keep it for them, because this usually goes the other way around. Another industry is also construction; but I won't get into that because that requires me to talk about manual labor, something which I don't like to do!
