Short history of “Ermita de El Rocio”. According to the studious people of “El Rocio”, about 1262, Alfonso X “El Sabio” (the wise) (1221-1284), builds a hermitage in El Rocio after having conquered the village of Niebla in Huelva. They keep on saying that Alfonso XI (1321-1350) mention this small hermitage on his book about hunting (1340). There are not many records left that speak about this hermitage since then. Until it´s founded a chaplaincy with the legacy of Baltasar III (1629-1646) in the Hermitage of Santa Maria de las Rocinas, being its patron the Almonte´s Town Hall. It is from that epoque when cults are balanced, works are done and it´s built lodging for the chaplein. It says the legend that at the begining of the XV century, a hunter, Gregorio Medina, found a statue of the virgin, probably hidden by christians in the Arab times, and alerts the village of Almonte, the nearest one about this discovery. Rasing the village a hermitage at the place of the discovery. Being this place of devotion by the inhabitants of the all arounding villages, till that on the 29th of June of 1653, the Virgen del Rocio is proclaimed patroness of Almonte.
