THE EDUCATION OF
A SMALL COMMUNITY
The first taste of education that the little community
of Foleyet received was the "School-On-Wheels." School was taught
within a boxcar that was furnished as a schoolroom in one part, and a living
quarters in the other. This type of education was funded by the government
from 1926-1965. The "School-On-Wheels" followed the route of Foleyet
to Capreol, Ontario.
Fred Sloman was the teacher. The Sloman family consisted
of Mr. Fred Sloman, Mrs. Cela Sloman, and their children Joan, Fredda, Margaret,
Elizabeth, and William. Fred Sloman retired after 40 years of teaching approximately
1.5 thousand children in car #15089.
The first public school teacher in Foleyet was Miss I.
Lebranche. She taught her pupils in a building where the current Fire Hall
exists today. A separate school was built in 1921.
Miss O. Flanagan was the first teacher there. The Sisters of the Holy Cross
arrived in 1935.
A public school was built in the year of 1924. It then
burned down in November 1930, and was rebuilt in 1931. That school was later
torn down and another was built in its place.
