What good is the
Space Program? |
Well, short story is that NASA and other's have been sending probes to other
planets for years. SETI monitors the radio waves for signals from other life. Man has been
to the moon, both as a challenge and as an expedition. Hubble Telescope is scanning the
universe and sending back magnificent pictures. The Mars expeditions, ultimately resulting
in the successful landing of the Rover have sent plenty of exciting data back about our
nearest planet. Now there is talk of sending a manned mission to Mars. Many probes have
been sent to different places in our universe. Lot's of things have happened, and continue
to happen. It really isn't sci-fi anymore!
To get an idea of what has happened so far in Space Exploration, we must first go to the NASA History Archives
and dig through literally hundreds of documents! (This is a fully searchable
web site. Be prepared to dig through hundreds of titles when you submit your search
request. NASA has done a fantastic job of making their materials available
online)
At the NASA History Archives you can find information on the early space
exploration attempts, both successful and not so successful, recent launches, updates and
a host of other things.
Or, you can read our info!
The Early Probe
days! Or things that go BOOM
often! Read our humorous (and informative) account of the very first years of space
exploration. A real "marathon" race between the United States and the Soviets
for first place, not to mention bigger better faster! NOTE: This is not meant to be a full
accounting of all space exploration activities during those years, but instead a selection
or summery of some of the attempts at orbiting, moon, mars and Venus shots.
