First Generation
1. William T TRAVIS - Born 1814 in NC.
He married Nancy T - Born 1819 in NC.
William and Nancy moved from NC to TN between 1850 and 1856 and then from TN to KY between 1857 and 1862. 1870 census records show that John C and a (William) both owned property in Muhlenburg Co KY.

John TRAVIS and Elizabeth FORD grew up on neighboring farms at Hogan's Creek NC. They lived with Elizabeth's family on their farm for a while after they were married. John and Nancy were on the wagon train, along with their 3 year old son, James Washington, and settled in Rosewood KY on a farm next to her parents.

James W was born in 1857 on Hagans Creek in Casewell Co NC. He was only three years old when the families made the wagon train trip from NC to KY. It was probably a great-big adventure for him since he was to young to have to share in the work on the trip. I can just picture him asking his mom and dad, John C and Elizabeth, "Are we there yet?" And because of his young age, he was probably at a very high risk during the outbreak of typhoid fever at the Cumberland Gap.
James was the first of our ancestors to grow up on the land in KY that we are all so familiar with. He probably helped his father with the work on the farm and rode a horse across some of those wide open fields in Muhlenburg Co KY.
He married Nancy Berry MITCHELL in Greenville KY.

Died 20 Nov 1905. Buried in Belton KY.
Around 1874, at the age of 17, James Washington Travis married Nancy. Their first child, John H.W.T. was born when they were only 16 and 18 years of age. There is also a reference of Nancy B. living with a brother named John before she married JWJ. (Is this another Mitchell son?)
Nancy's father was Isaac Mitchell.

13. Nancy A. TRAVIS Born 1860 in KY. Died 1912. She married Jefferson T. EVITTS.18 May 1884. Died 20 Dec 1936 in Logan Co KY. 14. Melissa Georgia TRAVIS. Born Jun 1863. Died 20 Jul 1929 Buried at Rhoad's cemetery. She married William Callup SULLIVAN. 7 Jan 1866. Born in from Browder KY, Todd Co KY. 15. William Robert TRAVIS. Born 27 Dec 1868. Died 20 Dec 1942. He married Laura Etta LATHAM. 17 Nov 1898. Born 27 Dec 1882. Died 21 Feb 1939. 16. Pinkney Thomas TRAVIS. Born Feb 1870. Died 6 Mar 1911 in Rosewood KY. He married Martha F. MOORE , 9 Dec 1888. He died 25 Jul 1943 in Greenbriar KY. 17. Johnnie Lee TRAVIS. Born 10 Jul 1879. Died 7 Aug 1942. He married Minnie Bell BIVIN, 13 Aug 1896. Born 24 Oct 1875. Died 20 Oct 1948.
Frank was a coal miner and farmer but moved to Earlington KY for a short while and tried the restaurant business. Frank and Hattie returned to Muhlenburg Co around 1915 and had a home place just below Ebenezer Baptist Church on the Beech Creek Road, renamed Merle Travis Road the summer of 1991.
He married Hattie Lee MAYS, 1 Sep 1897.

They were married at Rosewood KY. Died 24 Dec 1966 in Earlington KY, Hopkins Co KY. Around 1905 they moved to Hopkins Co KY and for a short time ran a restaurant in Earlington KY. At the time their oldest son married, they were living in St. Charles KY. John and Ivy have four children 20. Elizabeth TRAVIS. Born 1879 in (her birth date may be 1877) Rosewood. She married Hezakiah HARPER, 1849. Born in from Todd Co KY. They had the following children: 28 i. Novella HARPER
Robert and Verda are buried at Woodland Baptist Church cemetery in Greenville KY.
Robert was a carpenter. When he retired, he built the child tables and chairs, baby doll beds and tables shaped like hands which are being passed down through our children. At that time, he ad cataracts on his eyes so bad that he built them mainly by touch. (Jeni's table chairs (the first set he built) were built in 1974.)
He married Verda May SMITH, 7 May 1925 in Greenville KY.

Verda was 14 and Robert was 20 when they met. She had walked to the mail box at the end of the long road leading to her farm, and Robert was plowing the field across the road. She says that she was a "tomboy." They started dating and were married seven years later when Verda was 21. Verda never saw anyone but Robert.
Verda still lives in the house she and Robert built in 1967 when they retired and moved from Evansville IN back to Greenville KY. It sits on the farm her father bought in the 1940's. It is less that 20 miles from where the first TRAVIS' settled in 1860 at Rosewood KY.
