Missing Children
The Loss of Innocence
Every 18 seconds, a child is abducted. According to a study by the U.S. Justice Department, 359,000 children are kidnapped every year. Of that 359,00 total, 4,600 children are kidnapped by people who are not relatives, many result in rape and assaults, and even death, as it did here in the town where I live, just a few days ago.

On Thursday of last week, May 1, 1997, two sisters, aged 15 and 12, disappeared from their home after getting off the school bus at the end of their driveway. Their names were Kristin and Kati Lisk. They found both girls last evening, May 6, 1997, five days after their disapperance. Their bodies had been dumped in a river 40 miles from here.

This kind of thing doesn't happen in your own town, right? Think again. In fact, this is not not the first time it's happened here. Only seven months ago, Sophia Silva, 16 years old, disappeared from her front porch after school. Like Kristen and Kati, Sophia's bodie was found five weeks later. The police here believe they have that killer behind bars awaiting trial in September.

That means we have another child killer here. And the community in which I live in is now terrified. Is not safe enough anymore to let our children play in their own front yards? These are innocent children. These children are our future.

Meanwhile, a murder investigation gets underway for Kristen and Kati's killer. And hopefully that person or persons will be brought to justice, and soon, as will Sophia's killer. This page is dedicated to these girl's and their family's, and all of the other thousands of children who are still missing. Help bring them home safely, so that another mother doesn't have to mourn on Mother's Day as two of them here will be doing this year.

Kristen, Kati, and Sophia; this page is for you. May god bless your families.

**June 10, 1997** Latest update...Police just released a news conference saying the crime lab made a mistake in the evidence against the man behind bars for the killing of Sophia. The murder charges are being dropped although he is still in jail on another charge. Police say he has not been eliminated as a suspect, even though they are now looking at the links between the two cases. It is now thought that we may have a Serial Killer here who is stalking these young girls. There are still no new leads or suspects in the Lisk case.

Child Safety Tips For Parents

  • NEVER assume that your child(ren) will not be abducted.
  • Although alot of abductions that occur involve complete strangers, many others are people who live or work near the victim's home.
They may earn a child's trust with simple actions such as calling out his/her name after reading it on a shirt or backpack.
  • Never write a child's name on a piece of clothing or backpack that is visible for anyone to see.
  • Have your child(ren) fingerprinted. Contact your local police department for more information.
  • Always have a current photograph on hand of your child(ren).
  • Know who your childs friends are, their parents, where they live, phone number, etc.
  • NEVER leave your child(ren) unattended (car, grocery, mall, home, etc.)
  • Set up a secret "code" word that only you and your child(ren) know so that should someone other than yourself ever have to pick up your child(ren), if something were to happen to you, that person can convey that password to your chil(ren) so that they know it is safe to go with that person.
  • Our children are taught about "strangers", but let them know that "strangers" look like nice people too.
  • Go over the following list of safety tips with your child(ren).

Safety Tips For Children

  • DO NOT get into a car with anyone unless your parent tells you to.
  • Stay away from anyone who follows you on foot or in a car. You do not need to go near a car to talk to people inside.
  • Adults should not be asking you for directions or to help them look for a "lost puppy", etc.
  • Adults should also never tell you that your mother or father is in trouble and that they will take you to them without a secret "code word".
  • Quickly get away from anyone who tries to take you somewhere and yell or scream, "This man (or woman) is trying to take me away," or This person is not my father (or mother)."
  • Use the "buddy system" and never go places alone.
  • Always ask your parents' permission to leave the yard or play area or to go to someone's house.
  • Never hitchhike or try to get a ride home with people unless your parents have told you it is OK to ride wth them.
  • People should never ask you to keep a special secret. If they do, tell your parent's or a teacher.
  • Never let anyone take your picture unless your parent's say it's OK.
  • No one should touch you on parts of the body covered by your bathing suit, nor should you touch anyone else in those areas.
  • You can be assertive. You have the right to say "NO" to someone including adults and even relatives and friends who try to take you somewhere, touch you or make you feel uncomfortable in any way.
  • Practice a special yell. Make it low, loud and long. It allows you to tell someone trying to hurt you, "I know what to do! I'm not an easy victim!" It tells everyone within the sound of your voice, "I need help!" It gets you going, it breaks the spell.
You should not panic and freeze, thereby becoming inmobile in an emergency. When you yell, you take a deep breath, thereby getting oxygen and energy to your brain and your muscles. Your special yell can give you courage and get your feet moving when you must runaway.
