Music Ministry

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.
Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord.
          Ephesians 5:19

At WBC, we believe that music is an essential part of the life and worship of God's people. The music ministry seeks to aid in the spiritual formation of the congregation by using the best of contemporary and traditional expressions of congregational song and sacred music from a wide spectrum of historical, contemporary, and ethnic sources and traditions.

The Sanctuary Choir is the main service choir, composed of singers high school age and older. This choir usually sings at both the 8:30 and 11:00 Sunday services, performing an eclectic mix of musical styles from Renaissance chorales and Colonial American music to classic contemporary anthems and black gospel arrangements.

Our graded choir program includes a Preschool Choir music activity for ages 4 and 5, a Children's Choir for grades 1-5, and the Heavenly Voices Youth Choir for middle school and high school students. (No audition is required to participate in any of these choral groups.)

In addition to these choral groups, WBC has a number of instrumental groups that regularly perform at our church and in the community. The Warrenton Baptist Bells is a handbell ensemble that plays a 4-octave set of Malmark handbells. The Churchestra is an instrumental group that performs preludes, accompanies congregational singing, and occasionally accompanies the Sanctuary Choir. Joyful Noise is a contemporary rock band that often accompanies the Heavenly Voices Youth Choir performances.

Service music and support for congregational singing is provided by a 25-rank pipe organ built by Barger and Nix, Inc., incorporating the original 1981 Lewis and Hitchcock instrument. This organ, completed in December, 1998, incorporates the latest state-of-the-art technologies available.

WBC also sponsors an annual Children's Music Camp each summer. The week-long camp (usually held in July) is open to those who have completed first through sixth grades. Activities include crafts, music classes, instruction on tone chimes, and the preparation of a mini-musical to be presented on the following Sunday morning.
