Coat Colours:

Equine coat colours result from the 39 individual genes contained in the horses DNA. These genes result in thousands of different colour combinations, ranging from simple grey and black to detailed coats of the appaloosa and pintos. Some breeds such as the pinto, palimino and bucksin are known for their colouring and are an important consideration when registering with a breed society. The colour of a horse will not affect his temperament nor will it affect their ridden ability. When choosing a horse, the colour is not the main priority.

Face and Leg Markings:

White markings can occur on the face, muzzle, and legs. They are useful as an identification source. These markings are caused by lack of pigment in the skin in certain areas and can be considered like our birthmarks. Horses vary with the amount of white on their body. Some may have much white markings and others may have no markings at all. Other markings such as flesh marks or patches of white can occur on the underside of the belly and the flank area.
