Thomas A. Alexander resided in Alexander County and enlisted in Company E, in Irdell County at age 33, on August 15, 1862. He was wounded at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863 and returned to duty in September - October, 1863. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House on May 12, 1864. After being confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, he was transferred to Elmira, New York, July 25, 1864 and died at Elmira on August 11, 1864, of "chronic Diarrhea." Private Alexander is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, New York.
