Columbus R. Carter was born in Surry County and resided
in Ashe County were he enlisted in Company A on August 27, 1861.
He was 20 years old. At the battle of Hanover Court House (May 27,
1862), he was captured and confined at Fort Columbus in New York.
He was paroled and transferred to Aiken's Landing on the James River where
he was received on July 12, 1862, for exchange. He died of chronic
diarrhea at a hospital in Richmond, Virginia, on October 1, 1862.
Private Carter is buried in the Oak Wood Military Cemetery in Richmond.
