Larkin J. Chapman was born in Wilkes County and resided
as a farmer in Alexander County prior to enlisting at age 30 in Company
G. His enlistment date was December 28, 1861. He was captured
during the battle of Chancellorsville (May 3, 1863), and taken to Washington
D. C., where he was paroled and transferred to City Point, Virginia.
He returned to duty prior to September 1, 1863. Chapman was captured again
on April 3, 1865, in a hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He was confined
at Newport News, Virginia, and died there on May 8, 1865 of disease.
Private Chapman is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Newport News, Virginia.
