2. HENRY NAPOLEON2 BERRONG (UNKNOWN1) was born 1785 in Holland, and died 1885 in Newberry District, South Carolina. He married MARY RUCKARD January 01, 1810 in Newberry District SC. She was born Abt. 1798 in South Carolina.

Notes for HENRY NAPOLEON BERRONG:

According to the census record, the ancestor of the Berrongs was born in Holland in 1785. J. Miles Berrong's biography stated that his grandfather was born in France. Possibly the family moved from France because of religious persecutions. At any rate, Henry and a brother were kidnapped from their father's vineyards, or as another story says, from the school where they were boarding at Bordeaux. Tradition has the boys named Henry Napoleon and William Bonaparte (although Napoleon did not gain national prominence until the latter 1790's). The Berrong family were suppose to have been people of considerable means. The children may have been captured for ransom, or it may have had something to do with the families' allegiances during the French Revolution.

the children were brought on a ship to the coast of S.C. Once in port, a colored man took Henry on his back and swam to shore. Henry found asylum with a good family in S.C., possibly Charleston. According to tradition, men from the ship came hunting for him, and the family who took him in, hid him under the front porch steps and told the men they had not seen him. What happened to the other brother was never known. Henry was given futher education, as he became a teacher of wide renown. He grew up and married in S.C. According to his record for request for pension, his wife's name was Mary R. They were married in Newberry District, S.C., January 1, 1810. He supposedly had three wives, all named Mary.

The census of 1810 list Henry Berrong in Lexington, S.C. in 1820, he is in Newberry, S.C. The 1830 census finds him in Buncombe County, N.C. By 1840, he is listed in Henderson County, N.C. we lose track of him in 1850 and 1860. In 1870, he is in Towns County, Georgia, in the house of his son, Jesse. (In the 1850 Census of Union, and the 1860 and 1870 Census of Towns County, Georgia a Mary Berrong, born about 1798 in S.C., is living in the Household of Levi and Eliza Berrong Hooper).

Henry Berrong applied for pension for service in the War of 1812 in the spring of 1871. he was in the South Carolina Militia, Captian Charles Baker Company, Col. Samuel Cannon's regiment on Beaufort Island, S.C., and was discahrged at Camp Alston, S.C. His application was rejected because he only served 42 days in the war.

He is a man of strong and forceful personality, very energentic and perservering, and whatever he undertakes he does with all his might. Add to these charateristics a pleasing address, affability and courteousness, and the product is a man of influence, likely to secure any office of distinction. He is a striking type of a class of young men coning to the front in Georgia and the South, who will control the future of the state. He is already a conspicuous figure in politics of his section, and makes his influence felt. He is an ardent , working Democrat, a recognized leader has freqently represented the county in Democratic conventions, and is prominent in the councils of the party in NorthEast Georgia.

My time in the Army

I did not join the Army because I wanted to; I joined because I was following my heart. I would have to give you the background first so you would understand. Here's how it all started...

My best friend in high school was a guy by the name of Rick Cadel. We both went to middle school together and then on to high school; I spent Most of my freshman year in high school looking for the perfect girl to date. I was not much of a ladies man but i had some charming qualities. I was every ones friend, I mean all the girls would use me as their leaning / crying post. I didn't mind of course because it put me closer to all the pretty girls in school. Rick was a fun guy to hang out with and he was always cracking jokes about other people. For a while Rick and I competed for the same girls in school. I went out with a Girl named Melissa Yakel, who was nice but did not want a serious relationship. I did, see up till then I had never had a real Girlfriend so you can imagine when I caught her with another guy it broke my heart, but I'm glad that it did because Rick and I would never have met Marybeth. Marybeth was the most beautiful girl in school and I was so jealous of Rick that I was green. I was in a fix because Marybeth confided in me and Rick was my best friend. Somewhere down the road when Rick started treating her bad I fell in Love with her; I never told her that and we remained friends for many years to come. When I left for Basic Training at Fort Jackson she moved in to my house and lived with my mom till I got back. I did not know she had done that because when I arrived home I found that I had a roommate! Now I have to back up a little; See ya know how we met but not the real grit of the story. So here goes...

After Marybeth and Rick there was Marybeth and Bobby; Supposedly the man of her dreams (Boy who was she kidding). Marybeth and Bobby got pretty serious but he broke her heart and hurt her. I didn't get to see her at all while they dated. I found out they were going to be stationed at Fort Hood Texas and I couldn't bear the thought of someone stealing the Love of My universe away from me so I was determined to do all I could to screw them up. I did sort of. I really screwed myself up...

I Enlisted in the Army for 3 years Active Duty and I chose to go to Fort Hood as my Duty Station. I thought she would be there; boy I messed up good because guess what? I'll tell ya what! I went to Texas and they stayed in Georgia and they split up. Four more years went by of Good byes and casual hello's while I was on leave and home for the holidays. I still loved her even when we were a world apart and after all the years. That;s how I knew that Marybeth was meant to be. I love her to this day, each one just a little more than the last. It's the total package I think. I was blessed by God I think. After all sometimes if you pray and mean what you say he'll listen and hook you up. This past August 9th on 1997 we got Married to one another and I have been on cloud nine million ever since. I feel as though a giant hole in my heart has been filled. Everything I was searching for I found in Marybeth. I look foward to seeing her everyday and holding that hand everytime I ask for it. I love snugglling up with her and cooking those Korean meals for her (I love to cook) not to mention just watching her sleep. IT's the smell of her hair, the touch of her lips to mine the back rubs the understanding after a long days work and most of all she gave me a super awesome little wonder Named Robert who is now the center of both our universes. I adore him and marvel that she put up with me for those nine months. I can be a real BEAR! I love my wife and son with each beat of my heart.

Some of my memories of my family from when I was little-

When I was little, between one and five years old I would have to say that my most favorite relative in my life had to be my Granddaddy, As far as I was concerned the son and the moon revolved around my "POP". That's what we all called him (The grandchildren). I can remember going down in the basement of our house which was his workshop and building things. I learned something new each day. What I remember most though was that "Everything has a place and everything in it's place" For my grand dad that meant that if you got a tool out you had better put it back where you found it and it had better be cleaner than when you took it off the shelf. I recieved a few spankings and a repriemand or two for that on more than a few occasions. I always thought that the workshop was a magical place and that just being allowed into my Grandfather's little world was something wonderful. That's where most of my memories with him come from, I do remember sitting in his lap everyday and him reading the Bible to me, I also remember him singing me to sleep and bringing in firewood with him in the winter. I got to fly a kite with him too! My mother did not even get to do that with him. He taught me how to fish and manners. I think my Grandfather was a fine Christian man and he made sure that everyone in his family lived up to those values that he set. I wish that he could have met my wife Marybeth; I think that they would have liked each other. I dream sometimes that I go fishing with him and we just talk about things going on with me. I carry my Grandfather in my heart wherever I go. It pleases me to see that my son looks at his Grandfather like I used to, with awe and respect. Robby thinks that Marybeth's dad is the Sun and the Moon, I think he is too. I never had a father growing up but that changed when I married Marybeth. Her Dad is good to me and for once in my life I have a real Daddy, I like that. Not only that but I have a Brother now too! Something else that I did not have before either. My Grandmother was pretty cool too! She used to make me"Bean with Bacon soup" as it was my favorite, When I was little she would rock me to sleep and after school she would make sure that I did not get into trouble and did my homework. On Christmas morning she would get up early with my mom at about 3 AM and open presents with me. When I was sick she always had these neat home remedies from the old days that would work better than any old drugs that you would get at the Pharmacy. She also was gifted, she had a sixth sense or something. Nana could see things that people could'nt see normally. Ghost or something I don't know. She was not weird or anything though. She loved my Grandfather with all her heart and it showed. She was a devoted mother and wife and was a Super Grandmother. It's neat to see my mother-Nana to Robby, act the same way that my Grandmother did. Brian started calling our Grandmother "Nana" when he first learned to talk and it sort of stuck with her and all the other grand kids too. My Mother- I love my mother, she has always given me anything I wanted, I was spoiled often as a child and still today that tradition lives on through my son who is King of the house. My mother is a neat person and she loves Genealogy and Family History. She is also a Cat fanatic (So am I). She loves going fishing and cathches mostly trees and bushes but for lack of trying to catch real fish :-) She is also a master semstress in my opinion and could sew just about anything she set her mind to. I think she is starting to look more and more like Nana did. I always have fun around mom. She gets along great with Marybeth and that's awesome.

Christmas 1999- Christmas Eve morning was spent at Grady Hospital in Atlanta while mom was having an Asthma attack. Marybeth and I played chess while waiting on mom. Christmas Day was great! Robby had a super time and Santa left a massive amount of gifts for him. I think the one he liked the most was the Big stuffed Tigger. The toy train that we got him was a flop and was broken before it even came out of the box. The rest of us did good too on the presents. We also attended Christmas eve candle lite service at Marybeth's church. Christmas party at Aunt Linda's this year was great! Everyone except Keith's family was there and also Kathy Stell who was recovering from just having Ashley; Joe and Kathy's new addition! David and Mindy were also absent but we all got a surprize visit from Mark and Allen Surls who just popped in! I hadn't seen them in about four years. The food was delicious and the family time was special. Tommorow Marybeth and I will go to Catholic Mass with my Aunt Helen and Uncle Tom. That will be a neat surprize and a first for both Marybeth and I. We also drew names tonight for a copy of the family history of the Surls and Stell families. Brian got the Surls copy and Kieth got the Stell copy. It was a great turn out and alot of fun for everyone. - Gene December 24-25 1999

New Years Eve 1999- New Years Eve was spent at home in preparation for the End of the world or Y2K or what ever the crazy folks in the neighborhood might throw at us. The Fireworks at Underground Atlanta could be seen from our front porch and the Gunshots and Weapons fire was like something out of the Gulf War or the DMZ. All in all I think that most of the folks around here were just out to have some fun and make the loudest noise they could (With Guns or whatever). We video taped the last 15 minutes of the Millenium from the couch and I ushered in the New Year 2000 with a sip from the champagne bottle. Dad and I took pictures with Robby and we all watched the Ball Drop at Times Square from the couch. Then we waited to see if the lights were going to go off and the water quit working. We were blessed-it didn't. Like I Told everyone though if we had not prepared the worst most certainly would have come and then we would have been up the creek without a paddle. I liked being with family for this special event in my life, it was something I will always remember.

Marriage Notes for MARY TAYLOR and CRISPIN VESSELL:

Our Wedding day was a Fairy Tale come true for both of us. For Nine years I'd been waiting for that day and when it was finally there it could not have been better! Marybeth's Uncle Charlie Swaney performed the service in a little church that sits right by the Hapeville Train Depot. There were about 60-80 people in attendance and it was packed. I wore my Uniform for the service as I had always said that I would be married in Uniform. Marybeth was Radient in Her wedding dress which made her look like a Princess or an Angel. We had everything so carefully planned and somehow the music got messed up during the service so instead of coming down the isle to the Wedding March she came down the Isle to Tim Mcgraw's "It's your Love". A song that I sang to Marybeth the night that I proposed to her. It made for a memorable event and a Wonderful day! Then we left and her dad had gotten us a limo to ride in - We had never been inside a limo and it was kind of magical. The reception was fun to and we had a very big barbaque at Marybeth's parents house. Marybeth ended up throwing the flowers up into the tree and we had to shake it to get them down. Andrew Carty was my Best Man and Gina Carty was the Maid of Honor. The wedding was awesome. Marybeth's Brother Bob was an Usher as were her cousins James and J.J. Shaw. Andy's Cousin Daniel did the music and my Uncle Gene did the video for us. Everyone took the pictures and as it turned out we got the pictures developed for free at K-Mart the next day.

Our Honeymoon was spent at the Marriot Garden Hotel and we had a great time. The entire event from start to finish was something that I'll never forget and a special memory to both of us.- Gene Dec 26,1999

Notes for ROBERT ANDREW VESSELL:

Things That my son does, that I love and think are neat and cool-

1. He says Daddy all the time or dada.

2. He plays "boo" with this toy he uses as a mask. (That's neat)

3. He loves his Grandaddy as much as I loved mine.

4. He already knows who Jesus is And can say his name.

5. He runs and plays around Marybeth's Dad's house and makes all of us smile even me. I wish I could be his age sometimes again, so full of life and wonder at simple things without all the problems.

6. He loves my wife and I unconditionally. And we love him!

I'm very proud of my son and Marybeth and I are Blessed everyday by him and the things he does.

October 4,1999- Robby walked backwards for the first time, he loves doing that and likes everyone to watch him.

Christmas 1999- Robby scored big with Tigger and Bear in the Big Blue house stuff. Santa left lots of Goodies. The look on his face was priceless.
