This page is about Alzheimers, Heart Disease, Cancer and other Health Issues Alzheimer's disease (pronounced Alz'-hi-merz) is a progressive, degenerative disease that attacks the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. What is Alzheimer's disease? Alzheimer's is a degenerative disease that usually begins gradually, causing a person to forget recent events or familiar tasks. How rapidly it advances varies from person to person, but the brain disease eventually causes confusion, personality and behavior changes and impaired judgment. Communication becomes difficult as the affected person struggles to find words, finish thoughts or follow directions. Eventually, most people with Alzheimer's become unable to care for themselves. What is Heart Failure? Congestive Heart Failure Fluid in the lungs or body resulting from failure of the heart as a pump. Right Sided Heart Failure Failure of the pumping action of the right ventricle resulting in swelling of the body, especially the legs and abdomen. Left Sided Heart Failure Failure of the pumping action of the left side of the heart resulting in congestion of the lungs. Forward Heart Failure The inability of the heart to pump blood forward at a sufficient rate to meet the oxygen needs of the body at rest or during exercise. Backward Heart Failure The ability of the heart to meet the needs of the body only if heart filling pressures are abnormally high. Cancer Research Imformation Here are 10 things you can do: 1. Don't smoke. Smoking is the biggest cancer risk. 2. Watch your weight. Get some exercise. 3. Eat a varied diet. 4. Eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruits every day. 5. Eat more high-fiber foods. What is a serving? One serving is: 1/2 cup fruit 3/4 cup juice 1/2 cup cooked vegetable 1 cup leafy vegetable 1 medium apple 1 slice of bread 1 ounce dry cereal 1/2 cup cooked cereal, rice or pasta 6. Trim fat from your diet. Eat lean meats, skinned chicken or turkey, and fish. 7. Cut down on foods like ham, bacon, bologna, and hot dogs. 8. Don't drink alcohol 9. Try to stay out of the sun when it is hottest, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 10.
