SINGLETON'S FROM IRELAND
These facts were taken from The Famine Immigrants - Lists of Irish Immigrants Arriving at the Port of New York, 1846 - 1851; Ira A. Glazier, Editor and Michael Tepper, Associate Editor. This seven volume set was published in Baltimore by the Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., beginning 1983. The set I found was located in the Knoxville City Library, McClung Genealogical Collection. The research and transcription is by Tom Land, August 1998. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy compared with the original book listings however I am human! Background:
During the period 1846 through 1851 between 600,000 and 800,000 people died in Ireland of disease and starvation. Close to one million emigrated overseas. In the early 1840's approximately 10% of the cultivated cropland in Ireland was devoted to raising potatoes. The average Irishman ate about 4 kilos of potatoes daily. Potatoes were a major food source of the poor, of which there were many in Ireland. The initial potato crop failure was in 1845 and the first potato blight was in 1846. The 1847 potato crop was better however the crop failed disastrously in 1848, improving slightly in 1849, 1850 and 1851. The last year of the potato famine, 1851, saw the heaviest wave of immigration - over a quarter million Irish immigrated to North America.
Below, we look at over 70 of those with the surname Singleton who became part of that 6 year period by arriving at the Port of New York. Relationships are shown where noted in the original text. Date ship left port given in month/day/year format. All listed without a ship were on the immediately preceding ship's roll. Listings are grouped as found in the books. Where one individual is listed and a group is also listed the notation (listed separately) is used for the individual. There may or may not be connection between individuals listed separately.
