Please remember that the persons listed here are volunteering their time to help you. Do not expect them to do indepth research for you. Please keep your request very basic. By copyright laws they may be limited on how much information can be relayed. Please keep in mind that this is time consuming and can be very tedious!

If you live in the Watauga area and would be willing to do some lookups in either the ASU Belk Library, Watauga County Library or the Watauga Court House, please let me know.

I recommend the Watauga County Heritage books, Vols. 1 & 2 which were published in the 80's. Anyone with roots in early Watauga County will find these books invaluable to researching many of the early settlers.

(Please note that Volume 1 is now sold out and is no longer available for sale.)
It is my understanding that they will probably not be printed again. For information on these books contact:

I recently received communication from Steve Sudderth who is with the Blowing Rock Historical Society. He said the Blowing Rock Historical Society and the Genealogical Society of Watauga County have the voter regeristration for Blowing Rock for sale with the proceeds to go to both groups. This is a copy of the originals with dates from 1890 to 1907. (Not transcribed)

Keep in mind - there are no 1890 Census Records, so information found in these Registration Records could prove invaluable to your research!

For more information, you can contact Steve sudd@apptechnc.net. Steve can be contacted by phone. E-mail me and I will send the number to you.

Sanna Gaffney can be contacted at the address above. Sanna can also be contacted by phone, but you will need to e-mail me and I will send her number to you.

Another book which is highly respected by those doing family research in Watauga County is John Preston Arthur's "The History of Watauga County with sketches of prominent families", originally published in 1915. This book has been reprinted and is available from the Genealogical Society of Watauga County at the address above.

Thank you, volunteers!

*This booklet was written & privately distributed by Rebecca Dougherty Hyatt in 1954. The genealogy section has been, and is being, edited and updated to include more recent information and happenings.

**It is my understanding this book is also currently available from The Curosity Shop (address above).

***Sandra lives in Ashe County and writes the genealogy and local history column for the Jefferson Post newspaper at least once a month. She sometimes includes free queries of 50 words or less regarding genealogy, but the query MUST relate to the Ashe, Wilkes, Watauga and Alleghany county areas. If you are interested you can e-mail her your query, but should follow up by mailing her a self-addressed, stamped envelope so she can mail you a copy of the column that your query is in. Queries are published about six times a yead, so there may be some delay, but "the price is right" . . . . it's free!

****The Watauga County Census records for 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 have been compiled at ASU and are for sale through the Watauga County Genealogical Society - (address above). If you have extensive research you might find it more convienent to have the published Census volumes.
