NO SPANKING

You have just entered a page that belongs to a mother who does not believe that corporal punishment (spanking) should be allowed in the public school system. The USA is the last major hold out in the industrialized countries to not ban paddling in all of our public schools. Currently, 26 states, including my home state of Ohio, still allow this form of abuse. Although the state of Ohio has provisions in its revised code regarding continued use of corporal punishment, we are finding that more and more districts who still use this barbaric tactic do not even follow the revised code guidelines. I have linked some excellent resource material for your perusal. Please, if you have children, take the time to look at these articles.

My oldest son went through the humilitation and degradation of receiving his first "paddling" in school when he was a junior in high school! What was the infraction? Using a telephone in a janitors office to order lunch from a local restaurant! First, the assistant principal said it was because he didn't have a hall pass. HE DID! Then, he said it was because he was in a restricted area. IT WASN'T POSTED AS RESTRICTED! After investigating a little on my own, I found that numerous students frequently used this phone, including children of school board members! Was this justified? Absolutely not!

He wasn't and still isn't, by any means, an angel. But, come on! A paddling for something so stupid?? To make matters even worse, the Assistant Principal, who paddled him, is about 6'4", weighs around 250 and when he hit him, he missed his skinny behind! Instead, he struck him on the back of his thigh leaving about a 3 inch red and blue bruise! We showed this place on his leg to the superintendent, I wrote a letter to the school board, and I spoke to the Principal and Assistant Principal. Guess what happened to the guy? NOT ONE THING!! As a matter of fact, the incident wasn't even discussed by the school board, despite my letter being hand delivered to the president of the school board. I also wrote a letter to the editor of our local newspaper, which never got published.

What lesson are these teenagers and young children learning when an adult takes a piece of wood and strikes them with it? Would you, as an adult, get by with doing this to another person in public? If your child went to school with a mark on him like my sons, and told school personnel that his parent had done this, what do you think would happen? That's right, in both instances the law would become involved. Yet, it is "ok" for this to go on in a public school! I just do not understand the reasoning behind this. I've been very vocal about my protests, but it hasn't done a lot of good.

I have 2 more sons to get through this school system. They are sophomores this year. I plan to be at the school the first day, and sign a form to keep them from touching my children physically in any way! This will never happen to one of MY children again! I can only keep being vocal and encouraging other parents to take the same action. I DON'T BEAT MY CHILDREN WITH A BOARD, SO NOBODY ELSE IS GOING TO DO IT TO THEM EITHER!!!
