Married for 47 1/2 years. Dad had just retired as Midlothian, Illinois Deputy Fire Chief after serving over 30 years of volunteer service. Mom served on the Women's Auxillary for as many years, supporting her husband in his efforts, as well as the community.
June 3, 1996, started like a typical day for Mom and Dad.
They had gotten their Social Security check, been to the
bank and grocery store, then headed out for a "surprise visit" to see me and
their grandchildren on a beautiful, sunny day at 5:30 in the afternoon a
drunk driver prevented that joyful union from happening. They never again
were to see their children, grandchildren or anyone else they held dear.
Just blocks from their destination the drunk driver crossed over solid double
yellow lines and crashed into them head on.
Mom was killed instantly and Dad had severe internal injuries.
After 11 days, never regaining consciousness Dad couldn't fight anymore, and
joined Mom in death as he had been joined with her in life for 47 1/2 years.
Their physical bodies are gone from this earth, but they
live on. They live on in my heart, mind and soul. I feel their ever
increasing love within me. I have been truly blessed to be unconditionally
loved by such special people who accepted my love in return.
The Beauty of a Rainbow has become my symbol of hope,
it's mom and dad reassuring me, that no matter what, I can cope. The Beauty of a Rainbow has become my symbol of their love,
since they are now with the good Lord above.
The Beauty of a Rainbow has become my symbol of peace,
for their earthly bodies have found their release.
The Beauty of a Rainbow has become my symbol of faith,
I get the feeling I'll always be safe.
So when the sunshine beams though rain clad days
I search the skies for that colorful bow so my soul can be comforted by the beautiful haze.
(inspired when a double rainbow appeared that seemed to connect the crash site where my mom died and the hospital where my dad died 11 days later.)
