Name: Cherry Headed Conure (aka: Red-Masked Conure) (Aratinga Erythrogenys)

Description: Green with a yellowish-green on the lower breast and abdomen. The forehead, lores, crown, eye area, cheeks, bend, edge of wings, outer under wing-covers, and thighs are red. The underside of the flight and tail feathers is olive-yellow. Periophthalmic Ring is whitish with an orange-red Iris. The feet are a greyish flesh-colour and they have a horn-coloured beak. Length is 33 cm (13. inches). Immatures have no red and the Iris is dark. All Conures are not sexually dimorphic and must be DNA or surgically sexed.**

In The Wild: Usually found in groups of 6 to 10 birds. They are nomadic, noisy, and conspicuous birds living in the forest in partially open areas with forest remnants. Occasionally you will find them on the edge of a rain forest or near towns and villages. Call is disyllabic and harsh.

Breeding Information: Breeding begins in May. A clutch consists of 3 to 4 eggs. The incubation period is an average of 23 days with a fledging period of 50 days. Egg size information currently unavailable.

Temperament: Medium-noisy to noisy Conure. Not a hard chewer. Shy and reticent in an aviary. They are playful and inquisitive when unaware of being observed. They are hardy when acclimatised. Enjoys bathing, and can be kept at liberty.**

Diet: This should consist of Pellets, a good Seed Mix (Safflower, Oats, some Sunflower--also sprouted--Paddy Rice, Canary Seed and various Millets), with Fruits and Vegetables (particularly apples and carrots) and Greens. White bread, rusk, and biscuit for rearing. Diets may vary so you should consult your Avian Veterinarian.

** (Please note that not all birds are the same and may vary somewhat in Temperament and Plumage.)
