Name: Green Cheeked Conure (Pyrrhura Molinae)

Description: General plumage green with a narrow reddish-brown frontal band. The forehead, crown, back of head, and ear-coverts are brown. There are some blue feathers to the nape. Feathers to the side of the nape, throat, and upper breast are brownish to greenish-brown and each feather is edged with a pale brownish-grey to dull yellow. The secondaries and primaries are blue. Abdomen is a brownish-red. The under tail-coverts are tinged with blue with the upperside of the tail being reddish-brown with a green base, concealed by upper tail-coverts. Tail underside is a brownish-red. Periophthalmic Ring is white with a brown Iris. Beak and feet are a dark grey. Length is 26 cm (10 inches). Immatures have a duller plumage than adults and only a very little reddish-brown color to the abdomen. All Conures are not sexually dimorphic and must be DNA or surgically sexed.**

In The Wild: Lives in all types of terrain with trees, swamps, and forests with fairly small trees. Can be found in flocks of 10 to 20 birds outside of the breeding season but have been spotted occasionally with larger flocks. Probable seasonal migration. They are quiet and approachable when feeding but noisy when in flight. Their call is disyllabic.

Breeding Information: Breeding is not difficult, this bird can breed throughout the year. A clutch consists of 3 to 7 eggs with an average of 5 eggs. Some of their eggs are often infertile. Incubation is 23 days with a fledging period of 50 days. Several breedings a year are possible. Eggs measure 24.2 x 1.96 mm (0.95 x 0.77 inches).

Temperament: Lively Conure (initially very shy). Young birds are more confiding. Enjoys bathing and their chewing varies from bird to bird. They are mostly quiet except when disturbed.**

Diet: This should consist of Pellets, a good Seed Mix (Safflower, Oats, Paddy Rice, some Sunflower--also sprouted--Canary Seed and various Millets), lots of Fruits, Vegetables, and Greens. A regular supply of branches with flowers and buds are also recommended. Diets may vary so you should consult your Avian Veterinarian.
