Name: Patagonian Conure (Cyanoliseus Patagonus)

Description: General plumage is a brownish olive-green with the head and throat slightly more tinged with green. White markings to the sides of the upper breast (absent in some birds). The center of the abdomen and lower thighs are a dull red. The lower back, upper tail-coverts, sides of the abdomen, under tail-covers, and upper thigh area are yellow with a light scattering of olive. The bend of the wing and wing-coverts are olive with the primary-coverts and outer webs of the primaries being blue and the outer webs of the secondaries a bluish-green. The upperside of the tail is an olive-green tinged with blue and the underside of the tail and flight feathers are a dark grey. Has a wide Periophthalmic Ring that is whitish with a white-yellowish Iris. The beak is black and the feet are flesh-coloured. Average length is 45cm (18.0 inches) with a wing length of 232 - 252 mm (9 - 10 inches). Immatures have a duller plumage and a horn-coloured upper mandible with a brown Iris. Achieves full adult plumage in 12 months. All Conures are not sexually dimorphic and must be DNA or surgically sexed.**

In The Wild: Usually found in groups of 8 to 40 birds, but flocks of over 1,000 birds have also been observed. Conspicuous because of extremely loud screeching. Very active and an agile climber in the branches of bushes. Can be found on all types of open country. Prefers dry regions with thornbush and cactus near water courses. Regularly found on agricultural land. Flies north in cold weather to a warmer climate. Their call is a raucous croaking or a shrill screech.

Breeding Information: Breeding is mostly from March to May. A clutch usually consists of 2 to 5 eggs. The incubation period is an average of 23 to 24 days. The fledging period is approximately 8 weeks. Their eggs measure 36.4 x 29.4 mm (1.43 x 1.16 inches).

Temperament: Cautious bird, often very noisy. Newly imported birds are usually shy. Enjoys bathing. They are occasionally hard chewers but often do not chew at all. Very slow to adapt to new surroundings and likes being on the ground.**

Diet: This should consist of Pellets, a good Seed Mix (Safflower, Oats, some Sunflower--also sprouted--Hemp, Wheat, Canary Seed, Rowanberries, and various Millets), lots of Fruits and Vegetables (such as half-ripened maize, rose-hips, and elderberries), and Greens. White bread, biscuit, and eggfood for rearing. Has a tendency to a biased diet and is often very conservative in feeding habits. Diets may vary so you should consult your Avian Veterinarian.
