Homeschooling Activities: You're Free to Choose

If your group or family would like to be involved in one or more activities, contact some of the organizations below.

4-H

http://www.uaex.edu (ages: pre-school to 19) Contact your local extension office.

ACT preparation classes

Contact your local high school. Classes are in the summer. In some programs, you take a free ACT test.

Mathcounts

Contact your local school or 1420 King Street, Alexandria,VA 22314 For grades 6-8. You will need a team of four for the district & state levels. One really good math person and three willing bodies is fine. All will learn from the experience. If you are a non-profit corp. homeschool, you need others from the same. You may use students from Christian Schools. If you are a regular homeschool, then members need to be from regular (not incorporated) homeschools.

Spelling Bee

Get the word list and information from the Democrat-Gazette. (1-800-482-1121 ext.3807) Begin county bees early, age varies by county. State competition is fun. Expect to know all of the words in the word book to go on to the national competition.

USAMTS

USA Mathematical Talent Search is individual math competition for 6th grade through high school. http://www.nsa.gov:8080/programs/mepp/usamts.html With a score of 68 or higher on the first three rounds, students are invited to take the AIME (Am. Invitational Mathermatics Exam) From there, one goes to The Math Olympiad..

Poetry

Science fair

Begin when the child is interested. Check with your local school or home school group.

Summer Reading Program

Probably every library in the country has one.

Arkansas Council of Teachers of Math (ACTM) Competition

$200, $300 and $500 scholarships at the state level in some categories. Regional tests in April & State in May (Get copies of previous tests before the test date.)

Arkansas Education for Gifted in Summer (AEGIS)

Free educational summer camp. They are all over the state and cover many areas for study. Contact Ann Biggers, Room 2038, State Education Bldg., #4 Capitol Mall, Little Rock, AR 72201

American Math Competitions (ACM)

http://www.unl.edu/amc Junior category: grades 8 and below. Senior Category: High School (These tests also lead to AIME, USAMO, and IMO like USAMTS.)

YESS program

Young Engineering & Science Students at Caltech in Pasedena,CA. Forty top students (sophmores & juniors) are chosen for this five-week all expenses-paid program. http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~caltechy/yess.html.

AR School for Math & Sciences (ASMS)

A residential school for juniors & seniors in Hot Springs entirely paid for by the state of Arkansas.

Computers

http://www.acm.baylor.edu/acmicpc This is the college site. There is also competition at the high school level.

TIP program

Talent Identification Program, Duke University, Durham, NC. There are only eight full scholarships to the Summer Residential Program.
