Tiffany's PlaceIs the Rottweiler the right dog for you?
Ok, so you like the Rottweiler breed. So just go on out and buy one! Not! It's best to make sure that your lifestyle will be compatible with the Rottweiler's lifestyle. Answer these questions honestly, so that you will not make a mistake if you think you should buy a Rottweiler anyway.
Rottweilers need a lot of time and attention. Rotties are large, active dogs, and they need to be excercised regularly. You must have time to devote to your Rottweiler. Rottweilers become very attached to their humans. If you are gone on a lot of business trips and can't take your dog with you, buying a Rottweiler may not be a wise decision, unless you have other family members you will devote their time to playing with your Rottie while you are gone.
Rottweilers, as I have mentioned, are large, active dogs. They need room to run and play. If you have a large backyard, that is excellent! But if you live in a small apartment in the city, it may not be a great idea to get a Rottweiler. However, provided you can spend time to play with your Rottie and take him for runs, it will probably work out just fine.
Rottweilers, as I have found out from my experience, can be costly at times. Big working dogs need plenty of food. Also, their are the costs of vet bills, and putting your Rottweiler into obedience school is never a bad idea.
Most of us have to go to work or school every day. This means your Rottie will be home alone. Whether you keep him inside or outside, you don't want your Rottweiler to become bored. Rotties may become destructive while looking for something fun to do. Keep some toys for your Rottie to play with, and, if at all possible, a buddy for your Rottweiler will do the trick. No one likes to be alone all day.
This is an even broader question, however, it is one that should be answered truthfully. If you have, say, back problems, a Rottweiler may not be a wise choice for you. Rottweilers need to play and be excercised. If you are unable to handle your Rottweiler, things can become dangerous. Of course, you can always invest in an older dog, one that would be a better companion than playmate.
Of course, these are just some things you need to be aware of before purchasing a Rottweiler. Talk to breeders, owners, and veterinarians. Do research. Read all the Rottweiler books you can get your hands on. Provided he recieves the right amount of attention, love, and excercise he needs, the Rottweiler is an invaluable friend who will be there for you for a lifetime.
