Cemetery records - Smith Co. TX Volume IV Southeast Quarter
JIMTOWN (OLD JAMES TOWN) CEMETERY
(Copied 15 February 1986)
Also known as Kennedy graveyard, this cemetery was once used by citizens of the community but has long been abandoned. Located northwest of the crossroads where the town of James Town once existed. Take Hwy 64 east to CR 246, just east of Arp. Turn left on CR 246 and stay on it until you get to intersection of Cr 246 and CR 26. Take CR 26 to right for short distance until you come to CR 244; turn left on CR 244 - 3/4 mile is old James Town. Cemetery is in a field and overgrowth on left, some 500 yards off road.

(My husband and I tried to follow these instructions and we went round and round in circles. A better way would be off HWY 31 east of Tyler or west of Kilgore. If you are coming out of Tyler take HWY 31 to CR 246 go south until you come to CR 26 turn left and at the Y go to the left. The cemetary is behind a red brick house. The people living there were very nice and helpful. You can drive about 1/2 way on a very rough road and then walk the rest of the way, straight back behind this house in a clump of trees you will find what is left of the cemetery. It is totally unkept and nearly all of the stones have been knocked over and broken. If you are interested in knowing who is buried here I have a partial list.)

My relatives buried here are:
KENNEDY, William - 20 June 1810 - 10 Oct 1860
KENNEDY, Butler - 2 Aug 1855 - 29 Sept 1881 - son of W.M. and C.M. Kennedy
KENNEDY, Catherine M. - 6 Sept 1830 - 6 Mar. 1895 - wife of William Kennedy - Our Mother
KENNEDY, Oscar - 6 Mar 1859 - 9 July 1898
HEURST, Little Cora - 27 Aug 1880 - 23 Aug 1883 -
2 yrs 11 mos 27 days - dau of James N. & W.A. Hurst

This is Wm Kennedy's second wife and two of their children and a grandchild.

At the bottom of the list is a post script which reads: (Four corner markers: "These markers are to preserve the boundaries of James Town Cemetery. One at each corner. Placed here by Wm F. Gilliam, October 5, 1981")

These markers were knocked down and broken too.

(I copied this record exactly as it was written in the Pension Records. She was 88 when she filed and 93 when she died. The date in quotation marks is her death date. I don't know why he died in Brazos Co unless he was stationed there. If he was born in 1839, he was only 26 years old. I need to research this more.)

Maybe I have partically solved the problem stated below. I believe that the date I have taken as Julia"s death date is not that at all but only the date that the administrator of her estate was picked. Would an administrator be picked 4 months before a death? I don't know. I think possibly she died in child birth or soon after. This has to be her son as he is named after her sister's husband Lovick Pierce Butler. Her sister Eliza died in June 1854. I don't know why he is not listed as a heir to Julia, but is listed as an heir to William later. I am still open for suggestions.

PROBLEM:

I have a problem with where Lovick Pierce Butler Kennedy came from. Julia died March 1855 (see information on her will above), L.P.B.K. was born 2 Aug 1855 (tombstone information), Wm and Catherine m. July 3, 1856. Also notice L. P. B. not listed as an heir to Julia, but is listed as an heir to Wm. Hmm! Interesting puzzle. Maybe you have an answer. Was he Catherine's child by a former marriage? Was he adopted? Are my dates off? Also I don't find Charles on my list of children. Did he die young? Notice other differences in spellings and initials. These could be simple transcribing errors. Let me know if you have the answers to my puzzles. I would love to hear from any of you.

THE BULLARD FAMILY - from the book "Bullard Its History and People

John Bullard moved from Virginia to Alabama in 1910. He engaged in the War of 1812 and in the Seminole War in Florida in 1818. He had three sons, Jack, Henry and Josiah...

Josiah was the father of John Henry Bullard for whom the town of Bullard was named. John Henry Bullard was born August 26, 1846 at Montgomery County, Alabama, the only son of Josiah H. and Annie B. Moseley Bullard. Josiah died in 1846 and Annie B. died in 1848. Following the death of his mother, John Henry became the ward of his uncle and aunt Lovick P. and Eliza C. Bullard Butler.

In 1861 the Butler family, with their ward, moved from Alabama to Texas and settled in Tyler. John Henry enlisted in the Confederate Army at age sixteen or seventeen and served with Terry's Rangers. Although no official record of his service has yet been found, the fact that the Confederate Veterans placed a C.S.A. marker at the foot of his grave is evidence that he did serve in some capacity.
