Pappy Volney Howell
September 18, 1850 to June 1, 1928
Ruth Yearwood and Pansy Clark were remeniscing in 1986 about "Pappy"Volney Howell. They told of a black man named Ingram who was Pappy's playmate as a child. Ingram later lived in Van Buren, Arkansas, but he would come to Clarksville, Arkansas to vist Pappy.
Ruth said he would spend the day with him and the two would laugh, talk and reminisce the entire day. It was obvious how much each other enjoyed it; what good friends they were.
Mammy and Pappy Howell made their home with Ada Yearwood, Ruth's sister, for some years. Later they lived with Pansy Clark.
Pansy said that when Pappy was with them he tell them the day Ingram was to arrive. This meant that the family meal did not include Pappy. He would eat with Ingram and they were not to be disturbed during their visit.
Lucy Yearwood Sallis related events on the day Pappy died. He walked to town, only a block away, as was his daily habit. He returned home, lay down on a day bed bed in the dining room at Aunt Liza's with no comment. When they tried to rouse him later, he was dead. Mother (Lucy Yearwood Sallis) lovingly said, "Pappy quietly came in, lay down, and died," as though this was typical of him--a man who made no fuss.
