BEDWELL FAMILY HISTORY

THE ORIGIN OF THE BEDWELL SURNAME

It is generally accepted that the surname BEDWELL is English in origin. The name is one of many that identified a person based on where they lived. It is believed that BEDWELL (as a place name) is derived from the Old English term, Bydewelle or Bedewell. The term refers to a small stream or pool in a shallow valley. So the early BEDWELLS most likely were those who lived near such places.

WHERE DID THE BEDWELLS COME FROM?

The general consensus is that the Bedwells in America descend from Bedwell ancestors in England. There is some evidence, however, that the family also had connections to Scotland. The Bedwells that I am concentrating on in my studies are all descendants of Robert Bedwell, b. 1635 in England.
