EGG Jr.'s WW2 History- A Sum-Up of What You Saw on the Map

1) 2/24/1943- Earl George Gubbins (or "EGG") joined the Navy [cut off map]

2) EGG went to boot camp for three months- Camp Lawrence, Great Lakes [cut off]

3) EGG got 9 days leave in May '43, he visited home, then went back to Great Lakes at the end of his 9 days [cut off]

4) EGG spent 16 weeks at Mackini Mate School- 1 week of KP Duty (kitchen duty) [cut off]

5) EGG spent 4 weeks in an outgoing unit before starting 16 weeks at Barracks 307 [cut off]

6) Boot camp- Lawrence Barracks 1608

7) EGG finished school in August 1943 and got a 48 hour leave

8) EGG went to Washington D.C. to try to qualify for deep sea training, but couldn't pass the eye test.

9) EGG was then sent to Tamp, Florida for 3 weeks. On 10/27/43 he was assigned to the USS Mauna Loa Ammunition Ship.

10) The Mauna Loa left Norfolk, Va on 11/5/43 and arrived at Charleston S.C. , then left for duty. After spending Christmas at sea the ship arrived at the Panama Canal with an escort of 50 ships.

11) After several days the Mauna Loa passed through the canal, spending New Years Day at sea while traveling to San Francisco CA, where EGG met his cousin Ed Horseman.

12) The next morning the Mauna Loa departed for Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The ship then traveled to Jajuso Atoll.

13) The Mauna Loa returned to Pearl Harbor, then departed on 3/15/44 for San Francisco, arriving on 3/21/44 at Pier 18.

14) The Mauna Loa left San Francisco on 4/10/44. On 4/18/44 the ship crossed the international date line, and EGG was initiated as a Shellback.

15) On 4/28/44 The Mauna Loa arrived at the New Hebredes Islands, where he met his father.

16) On 5/27/44 the Mauna Loa left the New Hebredes.

17) On 6/11/44 the Mauna Loa left Amjaro, arriving at Enevetok on 7/23/44.

18) On 7/25/44 EGG had an emergency appendectomy on the Mauna Loa.

19) On 8/4/44 the Mauna Loa arrived in San Francisco. EGG flew home on 8/6/44 for a 9 day liberty, returning to San Francisco on 8/16/44.

20) The Mauna Loa left San Francisco on 8/28/44 and arrived at Palu on 9/18/44.

21) The Mauna Loa left on 9/27/44 and afterseveral stops arrived at Pearl Harbor on 10/29/44.

22) The Mauna Loa continued on, passing Gwaguline on 11/22/44 and arariving at Encietou Atoll on 11/23/44.

23) The Mauna Loa continued on, arriving at Ulethes on 11/30/44.
